I had a really long drive home tonight and had a good cry to myself when VNV Nation Illusion came on, twice!
What songs tug on your heart strings?

"A song called Austin by Blake Shelton."
Is your song linked to something?
Illusion was dedicated to Sophie Lancaster but the lyrics touch me in a way that makes me bulb every time.

Mr Brightside - it was a friend of mine's favourite song.
Home - Michael Buble - reminds me of Dad as the last words he said were "When can I go home?"
Do you hear the people sing? - Played at Dad's funeral!

Carter USM - Johnny Cash
Leatherface - Springtime
Wonder Stuff - Piece of Sky
Lyrically those songs do set me off. But there are other songs that are linked with bad moments that I still hate to hear: Everybody Hurts, by REM, Anytime Anyplace Anywhere by Carter and Occupation by Mega City Four are all linked to deaths of people I cared about and will still regularly see me skip if they come up on my MP3 player |

"There are 3 for me. 1. I cant live, but has to be the neilson version and not Mariah Carey. 2. REM . Everybody hurts. 3, Days of our lives I think it was Queens last song before Freddy died. "
re Nilsson's "Without You".
A very sad and tragic story in itself in that the two songwriters later committed suicide, mainly as a result of financial troubles after being ripped off by their manager. By most accounts. |

Mike and the Mechanics - Living Years.
I'm talking proper hot tears. Relates mainly to my fucked up relationship with my dear old sad.
And this one will make you laugh: two little boys by Rolf Harris.

The only songs that have managed to pull tears from my eyes are country songs. They are always so sad.
Letters from home by John Michael Montgomery. The last line gets me every time.
I was pregnant when it came out and JC was on a tour that whole time.
The bed by Gretchen Wilson. Song about taking love for granted.

I have 3......
1. REM - everybody hurts, played when I gave birth to my son (who was stillborn), still can't listen to it all the way through.
2. Prince - purple rain
3. Peter Citera - glory of love
the last two remind me of my nephew who was murdered. we used to slow dance to them, they both make me.cry and smile at the same time.

Seriously though, I think only certain pieces of classical music will rouse that kind of emotion in me. One that springs to mind immediately, is Nimrod, from Elgar's variations. Think its always going to be associated with remembrance Sunday, in my mind. |

Nimrod is a funny one because as you say it's locked into our consciousness as something sorrowful due to the armistice connection. Yet Elgar wrote that particular variation as an affectionate piece for his best friend, Jaeger. It's supposed to be uplifting, rather than mournful. But you're right, it's not regarded by us now in that way. |

There are certainly lots of songs with lots of deep meanings and memories for people.
Hope those of you who listen to tunes which remind you of someone remember the happy times and not just the bad.
Will Young-Leave Right Now (my little nan)
Christ De Burgh-Lady In Red (my granddad)
Pachelbel-Canon (my other grandad)
Star Wars Theme Tune (boy who was a neighbour who died tragically young of cancer)

First heard it live at Milton Keynes bowl in 1986. People had made fires all over the bowl and it was very atmospheric |

Tell me there's a heaven by Chris Rea - unfortunately worked with someone who killed his partners child after a Xmas party, was driving a few months later and heard on the radio thathe had been sentenced to life and they played this song. I had to stop the car as I was in floods of tears. |

You'll Never Walk Alone - Gerry and the Pacemakers
Lost a friend at Hillsborough, so anytime I hear that song, either on TV, Radio, it brings a tear to my eye. If I am at the match, it hits me even harder. |

I wanna be like you out of Jungle Book as it was played at the end of my cousins funeral who left us suddenly and far too young
I was born to love you is another. My friends lost one of their twins at 6 weeks old and this was played as the tiny coffin went. It's 21 years ago but it still gets me every time I hear it |

there's 3 songs that make me struggle to hold back a tear ( Mr here )
1) Your Song , Elton John....played at my younger brothers funeral , it says everything about what he tried to achieve.
2) Those in peril on the sea .....played at my dads funeral , he was in the navy , his cap was on his coffin as the curtains closed around him.....i dashed from my seat to grab his cap.....impulse reaction to hold onto him .
3) Boat on the river by Styx ......i.ll keep the reason for this song to myself . |

First time ever I saw your face by Roberta Flack makes me sad. At the end of my wedding video there's a montage of me beaming from ear to ear and my husband looking at me with such love. Roberta is singing away to shots of the happiest day of my life. |

Joe Brown did a cover of ' I'll See You In My Dreams' at the George Harrison memorial concert. That particular performance has me filling up because there is true feeling behind it as he was singing to his friend. |
