Should the forums be made private ??

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

A bit of a rant as its thursday lol !!

My question is should the forums be made private and viewable by members only ?

We enjoy the forums 99% of the time ( apart from the inane drivel posted by some who in our opinion shouldnt be on fab )

However as they are public and can be viewed by anyone does that invite people to join fab or have a negative effect encouraging idiots to join who have no idea of swinging etc ??

Many sites have forums but they are not public ? So how do you feel about your views and opinions being on show to the world ? Or would you prefer it was made private for members only ??

What changes would you potentially like to see ??

Admin and fab staff do a fantastic job regardless , just interested to hear peoples views etc ??

It doesn't bother me that people can see what I write.

If the forum wasn't visible people can join to read them in a few minutes if they really wanted to.

I would back that yes, don't understand why they are not private to be honest. Only have to look at what happened a while back over and Edinburgh social being 'outed', the press freely published the contents of the forums at that time....there may be a good reason for them to be public but I can't think what it may be?

Personally, as a single guy who has been on and off the "scene" for 19yrs. I think they should be for members only and even go as far, as needing to be verified or a minimum time on site to read/post! Stop the d*unks & wankers, getting their rocks off on a fake accounts then vanishing!! Just my view, not saying its the right view :0)

We were on pay sites before joining fab, there are as many less than genuine types etc as there are on here..

recognising thats a very subjective view..

if anyone thinks that some within our media wont put in the time and money to have a 'scoop' just look at the issue's with hacking etc..

just the way it is and probably has been even when ahem some of us used magazines to contact others..

even easier now..

I see where S&J are coming from - and remember the fuss caused up in Edinburgh (hence why we looked to use an established club for the social this weekend as that's hardly press-worthy! "Swingers meet at swinging club" isn't exactly breaking news! Lol).

Yes people could simply sign up if the forums were made private - but at least that would be a step in the right direction. I see the benefit in making them accessible by only verified users - but this would also exclude new members who are genuine and who find the forums useful for advice, support and, as many have in the past, a means of getting to know people.

Not sure what the solution is tbh - but leaving them open to anyone with access to the internet is possibly not a great idea.

The vast majority of people that I know on here don't even have a clue there are forums

Swinging is talked about frequently in almist every aspect of the media these days,I doubt making the forums private will deter anyone from wanting to join a site to see what its all about,in fact reading some of the crap on the forums may well put them off even wanting to give swingjng a go

Its a tricky one admittedly, from our point of view there is a slight concern as we have high profile DJ's at our events and as the event is posted in forums we run the risk of that being in the public eye ??

Just a suggestion but how about the some of the forums being made members only or something like that ??

My point was that the press could easily access the forums and print what had been written, some of which made people feel they could be identified which isn't pleasant and I know, they could have joined. waited a week and got access. Its just why are they public as in what purpose does it serve?

The forums can only be used by members, people have to join the site to post on threads ( I think )

Any site needs numbers to grow, so restricting access to features may result in less members and less revenue from advertising.

There is no advertising on fab, revenue is from members becoming site supporters.

Free members are bombarded with advertising, when you pay to join ie, become a member you don't get the advertising. hence the site needs free members to get an income.

agreed, bit like when folks find their pictures all over the web and are surprised..

dont think the media per se are that interested in the fact that people from most walks of life meet and engage in consensual sex..

some 'occupations' etc are clearly more newsworthy not that its news to most of course..

do see what the Op is saying but its a tricky one, perhaps any social type meets need to be more strictly managed as to whom exactly knows..

but even thats not going to be foolproof..

If i type something out and post it on the internet its my opinion and view point and i will stand by that comment regardless of who see's it.

If ultimately people are paranoid about anyone seeing/reading comments then simply dont post them. Only have ourselfs to blame for what views/information we put out there

Same for profile pictures.. sure its not nice but the only security we have is by not posting/uploading

Does it bother me that non members can read the forums? No. My opinions and i'll stand by them regardless

I understand would more than likely cost money but im sure some people would pay more if the facility to be able to have private chat rooms were available

to create a room and enter a code so a group of people/friends could all chat freely without fear of unwelcome parties joining..

or be able to instant message/cam one on one

Thats a good idea too, would be good to have a forum area that only paid members can access as well, perhaps not so easy to implement but could be a good idea ?? And yes i know these idea's should be in site feedback but its part of the conversation lol

POSSIBLY and this is just possibly, make the events and the clubs areas private, but how you would specify which members could use them and not i wouldnt know, because, as said, newbies need much more advice than older members, so these fora are a great place to get to find things out.

IF an organised meets section were to be made private, however, could everyone be trusted to keep communication about socials and the like there?

i dont think so.

The damage isn't done by those who post here, it's those who read stuff here and report it elsewhere.

Nowhere on the Internet is perfectly secure and you can throw money at making it a little more secure and still leak info.

I disagree damage has been done by people on here, dont know the rules and sat bad things about other members ( naming etc )

Personally i dont agree with the whole thing about " idiots still paying " I dont believe there are that many that would waste their time and money just to come and cause grief when there are free places they can go do it and not face being banned etc ??

We would happily pay a higher support fee if it meant mods / admin got paid and could do a full time job of keeping the forums safe etc.

We all know privacy doesnt exist on the net but taking precautions is always a good thing surely ??

Correct but the point is if they are public you dont need to sign up in order to copy or read them. If they are private then only people that have signed up can access them.

I would like to see it private, if nothing more than to stop minors stumbling across it. But that goes for control of anything of an adult nature on the net.

Making it private would make it harder, but as others have said, if people want to read it then they only have to sign up.

A bit like locking your door when you go out. It will stop a random passer by but not anyone determined.

I was on a training course last week about the dangers to children on the net, one thing I learned which was a huge surprise to me was that it's not the sites everyone would think would be a problem but more the ones we think are safe that are.

Children these days are safer outside playing than they are inside sitting in same room as some parents while they are using the net.

Classic case of: The horse bolted - so let's lock the stable door!

The media have freelance 'journalists' - and I use the term VERY loosely - on ALL the adult sites. They've had both single and couple profiles for YEARS - they use them 'like real members' - they get to know the folks in chat-rooms, through the Forums - Hell! They even arrange meets - and attend Socials/M&Gs/Private Parties - and get themselves verified. Then they go home, copy all the profiles details of those they've met/seen at events and copy/paste them into old articles from the Wunday Sorld - and send the 'new expose' to their Editors - who print them on slow news days - just because they can!

On ALL the Sites - No matter what rules you think you can bring in NOW - it's too late! The insidious ways they use to inveigle themselves into the scene are manifold but they're already HERE.
