Single lady in Marakesh ?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I love travelling and have often travelled to many different countries with friend or partner, but now I am single, I wouldn't mind doing a bit of solo travel, but somewhere a bit more exotic and with a buzz, so cut out spain, Egypt, turkey, Tunisia, europeean city breaks, done a few of them before. But one place I have been to before is morocco...atlas mountains and marakesh....the square and the souks esp at night have such a buzz about them. But was with a partner then.....and got followed too...which was a bit scary and unwanted attention. Would it be too risky to go alone as a single lady and walk in the old medina myself and most likely get lost as its like a maze there, but that's half the fun. Yes I like the buzz and thrill of the place but don't want to push my luck as some risk is exciting but don't want to push my luck and get mugged, followed and sold for a camel. Any other ladies been there alone ?

Marakesh is such an exciting place to be, its amazing. If I found another single lady to go with, or a single male, I would go with them !

Minx I have worked in the City and the country and I am all for adventure but it can be a scary place for lone western female travellers. There are group holidays to the city and excursions to the Atlas mountains I would advise that or take a man with you!

I think on occasions, even two women alone can have bother there. Its a place i would visit with a nice big stapping fella....that may put them off trying to buy you for a bunch of mangy camels ?? but then .....maybe not

I think 2 ladies r ok, no point being too scared else life would be so boring with no risk, u just minimise the risk and enjoy the place, think u would be limiting yourself if u could only go with a big strapping lad, there isn't a line of them in front of me wanting to go on an exotic holiday and be a body guard

I travel alone frequently and as long as your in a very good hotel 4 star plus and stick to organised trips you will be fine. I guess I have got away with it being mixed race and dressing according to country however European women do need to err on caution in both Morocco & Tunisia. In my opinion Egypt is slightly better.

yes I agree, I have been to Egypt and Tunisia before, but feel marakesh to be a bit different and more of an exotic buzz don't u think ?

I do think some ladies go without researching the area they want to stay (not you by the way) They dress and act so inapropriatly and that in its self courts unwanted attention....To those going alone and for the first time, you need to research it and respect the culture

I mean if u are single lady walking around marakesh esp at night in mini, heels and tits out then u r asking for trouble, end of story....and that trouble might end up being a nasty assault....remember its not Manchester city centre, u r talking about a muslim country and how the men think over there re western females is very em....not respectful shall we say and if some of the blokes gang up on u, there are 100s of dark alley ways to drag u into too

Wear appropriate dress, act confident but friendly and you will be fine.

Around the Souks and the main square you won't get any trouble, some areas of the Souks don't allow females, those near to Mosques etc. but you will just be turned in the right direction by people.

If you want to go to the mountains and the desert, go on organised trips, not by yourself.

The main thing is to dress appropriate.

Sit on the rooftop cafe with a camera and take photos of the transformation from plain square to bustling food court in a couple of hours. The most amazing thing. Or if you can wake up early enough, go to the square for sun rise, and watch it rise over the Koutoubia Mosque.

take hand sanitiser and anti bacterial wet wipes with u, have u had your vaccinations ? keep some some coins for child beggers else they will follow u everywhere, or have some sweets in pocket to give them instead, when in the square, the many men will stand near u when u stand still to watch a street performer, they r trying to touch u sexually or pick pocket, not all, but I experienced it quite a few times, watch....as if u walk away from them they might follow u to another spot, if they do don't keep running away from them be brave and let them know u can sense what they r up to and they will walk away, be careful re the orange juice stalls in the square many are diluted with tap water and it can cause tummy upset. Be careful walking around the souks at night, lots of dark alley ways, if u get lost ask a shop keeper for help, sometimes one,two or more people will offer help but they might take u the long way to your hotel and expect to be paid more than the going rate, don't take photos of street performers without asking, they have people looking out for them as they expect payment for tourists taking pics, if u get offered mint tea, try to accept as refusal is often seen as rudeness.....enjoy.

I am not 100% sure re vaccinations but I have had vaccinations that will cover quite a few countries and i think u r protected for 10 years or so. When i flew atlas blue years ago, before departing marakesh airport the plane was fumigated i think to minimise the risk of tourists bring back something to uk. I would double check re vaccinations with nurse in GP surgery, or ask at travel clinic at BOOTS

We didnt need any vaccinations last year. As Minx has said use hand sanitiser & when you buy bottled water always check the seal is intact as some shopkeepers refill them with tap water. We went on a trip to a waterfall which was really good. Enjoy bargaining in the souks, they always give you a high price so if you then give a really low one they will barter with you. Leather goods can be a good bargain. You will love it, when we went last summer it was 52 degrees!!

52 degrees I am sure some stalls would have closed during the day, I think locals told me that before, if it went over 50 then some people couldn't open up shop, maybe because most of the tourists were sitting in the riads like fried eggs

In my own little world

Went there last February on my own, got lost at night trying to find the main square. You'll be perfectly safe, just respect their customs and not be provocative and d*unk (not that they drink there). I ate at the same stand each night, and the boys were lovely and helped me gain better buys on the stands by bargaining the stall holders down.

"who did u arrange your flights and transfers with ?"

Our friends stayed out there last year so we emailed that Riad and booked direct. They are an English couple and have been very helpful . Dar Charkia it's called. They have arranged our transfer from the airport and have sent us recommendations on where to eat.

some riads there are quite expensive, you would think its cheap to stay there but some riads are very chic and up market, a big contrast to how some local people live, some of the rooms per night can be 150 or more per night high season, I stayed in riad farntchi, I felt like queen of the castle there !

Personally, having been there several times I think you will be fine.

It is not a dangerous city. You will get hassled in the square whether you are male, female a couple or travelling alone but as long as you are assertive enough to say no then it's never a problem.

Love, love, love Marrakech and getting lost in the Medina was a fantastic experience. I went with Travelsphere so had the group if I needed it. As a black woman I wasn't bothered too much but my direct look in their eyes and a firm no thank you sufficed.

I don't know if I'd have the confidence to go as a solo traveller though.

Solo as travelled alone, but with a company. They provided tour manager etc. 14 of us, three single women and a single man and five couples. I was the youngest!

When we went off on excursions I sometimes stayed with the group or went off wandering. I don't think I would have the desire to arrange my own excursions etc.
