The American singer/songwriter has taken his hammer to the great gig in the sky, aged 94.

R.I.P

Don't forget, he was also responsible for writing (or co-writing) the following greats for other artists:

If I Had A Hammer (Trini Lopez / Peter, Paul & Mary)

Turn, Turn, Turn (The Byrds)

We Shall Overcome (Joan Baez)

Kisses Sweeter Than Wine (Jimmie Rodgers)

And probably one of the most irritating tunes in history "Goodnight Irene", was a No. 1 hit in the USA for him and his group The Weavers.

RIP Pete.

Great shame. There was a documentary on TV last year about Woody Guthrie that Pete Seeger appeared in. Makes you wonder who is today's equivalent of these great protest singers and songwriters.

To be fair - and this is a massive overgeneralisation I know - but young people to me don't seem to be terribly militant anymore. Not compared to even 30 years ago.

Or have I fallen into that bloody age trap?

Protest seems to not be very in anymore

I agree, it all seems to be done by the click of a button now.

Protest song is still alive but more usually found in pubs, cafes and at house concerts.

I can't see Bob Dylan or Joan Baez making it onto Saturday night talent contests.
