80s Sitcoms, good and bad plus the indifferent

Titz Towers, North Notts

The 1980s seemed to spawn a number of sitcoms that just slid into obscurity without any visible effort. It may be the same for other decades, just that I grew up in the 80s and can remember the ones that never took off.

Good - Hardwicke House, blink and you'll have missed it. Grange Hill but on acid. Only one episode was ever broadcast as it was shown pre-watershed in a mindboggling decision and immediately pulled afterwards. However, to an 11 year old it was brill.

The bad - Dear John - how depressing was this comedy?

The indifferent - Watching - a show that no one remembers fondly and was so bland as to make cardboard seem an interesting topic on Mastermind.

I remember a very good american sitcom called Its Your Move about a kid who was always outwitting his mum's boyfriend

I remember "Watching" got it in the house on DVD too, not mine though, lol.

Blackadder, Red Dwarf and Only Fools & Horses will be the top 3 for me.

Happy Days- The Fonz!

"

Mindy: Come on Mork you aren't supposed to be sitting on your face. "Mork is putting his face right into his chair like he's relaxing".

Mork: Then why did God put it there.

Good show, but thought it was the 70s

Used to love that. My brother bought me the boxset. It's hard to watch more than 1 episode at a time, though

Fawlty towers was made in 1975 and for some reason the second (last) series was aired in 1979.

It was brilliance - but ended when Cleese & Connie Booth (Polly)'s real life relationship ended.

Also ended because they didn't want to spoilt the series by making too many episodes. They said they could hae made 8 series's, but it would have been overkill and they got it right with 2 series's containing 12 episodes.

Yep, but series' like Friends for example went on & on & on - with one-liners, cut every 3 or 4 seconds -yet, gained so much more success! Sacrilege, really!
