We're always told via campaign after campaign 'turn off your lights save the environment' plus tv on standby ect ect, then you watch these game shows and entertainment shows on tv and the amount of lighting they use is phenomenal!! We could save the planet by switching off one lightbulb yet the entertainment world can use as much as they want.... Go figure!! |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
Television and film people don't have to operate by the same rules.
I got a bit concerned when I saw that the flight I took to Belfast cost £9.98 for the flight and the rest of the cost was taxes and checking in my bags. That's not right either.

It's one lot of lighting spread across millions of people if its telly we're looking at here.
I'm more concerned with offices of large companies that light their floors all night 365 nights of the year, purely for aesthetics. |

Most of London's big blocks are lit like that all night, all year. The flyover on the Westway is all new buildings designed to be lit and empty.

I worked for twelve years in a large company and I campaigned for the reduction in lighting at night.
Eventually they agreed and saved in the first 1/4, the same as the salary of 3 people. |

I once attended a private talk with Al Gore and Bono on global warming and the environment. As we left they both got into separate Hummers, I kid you not. Talk about hypocrisy! |

"The same said people that leave a carbon footprint the size of the States, by flying here there and everywhere to these save the planet conferences?" Al Gore and Barry Hussein Obama come to mind.

When I worked in a call centre on nights I used to spend 15 minutes or so turning lights off, pulling the plug out on stuff that had been left on. Not so much to save the environment, but more because it kept us awake |

Things can be complicated ...
A few years ago, firm I worked in had about 500 desktop computers, which staff were instructed to leave ON (monitors off) overnight. In comes a bright spark director who decides this is Bad Business, so they have to be switched off. Which meant when everyone came in at 9 and switched *on*, the network collapsed under the weight of Windows updates. Some people couldn't start till 10. Then the hard drives and motherboards started failing....
We may have saved a few hundred pounds in leccy, but environmentally, it was a disaster. |
