Titz Towers, North Notts |
Very subjective, but what do people make of 1970's sitcoms?
Good - Bless This House - Sid James, being Sid James, but all very entertaining.
Bad - On the Buses - huge in its day, but crikey, can you imagine any of the cast on here trying their luck? Talk about poor casting as lotharios.

"Good - flowery twats and bad - man about the house"
I loved flowery twats, it's one of the only things I can watch over and over again and still laugh. |

They were amazing sitcoms in the seventies
Porridge has to be one of the best scripted and acted Sitcoms ever. I would also say citizen Smith and Steptoe and Son.

i was born in 76 so most of the good ones i wouldnt have appreciated at the time.
wen older there are so many that i couldnt possibly stop at 1 fave, or indeed 1 bad one, cuz many of those mentioned i never really enjoyed, but again, probably more down to the lack of being repeated through the 80s and 90s rather than them actually being poor, so bless this house, george and mildred and so on, didnt get them.
enjoyable: fawlty towers, porridge and one that hasnt been mentioned as yet, in sickness and in health. LOVED it! |

I was brought up in Tottenham, North London through the 60s and 70s, I still remember "Till Death Us Do Part" and later on "Love Thy Neighbour" probably the most racist programme ever made masquerading as "comedy" I witnessed at first hand the few black school friends I had (2nd generation West Indian)being called disgusting names in the playground directly as a result of this garbage. Seeing them upset and of course how could their parents explain its "just a TV programme" when they too were going through shit every day at work and in the street. It used to make me sick watching my dad laughing at it and all that Jim Davidson "my mate chalky" bollocks. Even "Mind Your Language" was just half an hour of continuous "lets take the piss out of the Stupid funny foreigner" people living up north probably thought it was hilarious where there wasnt any large black communities at that time but in London where us kids black, white or whatever were just good mates growing up together it was horrible seeing this shit on the box. Oh yeah that was the golden age of comedy alright,, NOT. Thank God its all gone, dead and buried . It should never have been made in the first place, So as you can probably tell, No Im not a fan of 70s comedy lol |

If you go back and watch any comedy shows, there are some very week episodes in the long running runs. Just look at national treasures like Only Fools... some of those were poor.
Fawlty Towers was faultless, but probably because there were so few of them.
Citizen Smith was filmed in the 70s in Tooting, were I was growing up. So that always holds a soft spot in my heart.
Bless this house I remember fondly, just because of Sid James laugh!
The Rag Trade used to make me laugh.... 'everybody out!'
I used to really fancy the French girl on Mind Your Language
Others I hated and still do
It aint half hot mum
Dads Army
I remember being bored to tears watching this.
Its amazing how many shows were blatantly racist during these times. Just a thought, but I bet you cannot get back copies of Love Thy Neighbour anywhere! |

"I grew up with 70's sitcoms. Used to watch them with my dad "
So did I!
My dad loved:
Til Death Us Do Part
Love Thy Neighbour
Mind Your Language
For me all the above was shite; I liked:
Rising Damp
On the Buses
Rising Damp
George and Mildred
Terry and June
Man about the House |
