What gets to me is how they charge fuel tax, then add VAT on top of that. They even tax the tax!

There is just something immoral about that. You have already paid income tax on the money your using to but the petrol with too!

Middlesbrough

Fuel, as a previous poster pointed out its a double tax and everytime the price goes up they take even more!

PAYE & NIS: born free and taxed to death. The govs slight of hand that increased everyones tax this year (as well as NIS!), not raising thresholds is a tax increase.

Road tax: why, it doesn't pay for roads, but might save the planet (yeah right!).

Alcohol: same as petrol, double taxed becuase we cannot be trusted and its for our own good.

Grrrrrrr

Then items you buy are taxed numerous times before it hits the shops, then you pay more tax when you actually buy it

We will have to pay tax tax at this rate

Very very few things annoy me but tax is one of them.

I wonder if they will ever start charging us tax for the air we breath and if we didn't pay the bill, would someone come round and suffocate us

Torquay

Hubby just drove back from Bordeaux where unleaded petrol was 1.29 Euros a litre.

Less fuel tax in France, but all that means is more profit for the fuel companies, doesn't mean cheaper petrol.

If the next government were to knock 10p per litre off of the cost of unleaded on the day after the election the fuel companies would simply increase their profits from each litre by putting it back up within days.

Tax is the government's income.

If you want to pay less, you need to agree to a reduction in government spending and/or better efficiency in government services...

The issue that makes me smile the most is any green tax. Environmental issues is now the new tax revenue stream for the government.

(Ps, it's easy to say get rid of this, stop that, please suggest what you will replace it with )

We should get the long term unemployed out planting trees and that would solve 2 issues!

So now that the icecaps are reforming and the green issue is a dead issue, will all the 'Green' taxes be lifted too?

Answers on the head of a pin please.

I know it been mentioned before.... But fuel tax. Why?

Well previous governments have encouraged us all to shop in out of town retail parks to take the traffic away from town centers. That's fine, less pollution etc in the cities and towns.

So now we have squillions of retail parks the only way for many of us to reasonably get there is by car.... But we can't afford it cos of fuel prices (most of which been tax).

They say they tax fuel for the enviroment yet push for new runways at airports??? Why build a new runway at heathrow that will take at least ten years to complete when oil be running out in 40 years anyway???

Wan@@@s the lot of em!

isn't cereal classed as food and therefore zero-rated for VAT ?

well, tax is just tax, and it is easier to slap lots of little taxes on things rather than one big tax on income, although the latter is perhaps more palatable as it takes into account ability to pay.

It is easy for a government, of whatever flavour, to introduce a tax on an individual item and then justify it with spin, for example, a tax on fuel because it helps the planet, etc.

The problem is that these taxes never get abolished - insurance premium tax was introduced to assist with payouts resulting from the IRA mainland bombing campaign. Now the IRA have stopped, the tax not only remains but has increased.

The best example is income tax, a temporary measure introduced in the 18th century to pay for the war effort against Napolean.

It is for now but i think he was on about rich or poor paying the same vat for the weekly shopping basket.
