I think that when a person reaches a certain age, they should be tested again to ensure they're ok to drive - ie perhaps 68 to take a first retest and each year after - with a medical - any ideas? Z

There isn't anything in place at the moment as a standard - if there are medical problems then it may be a requirement but don't think it's mandatory. Z

some younger folks would also benefit from retests and medicals. we have to pass a highway code test every 3 years to drive company vehicles. it is amazing how much new stuff comes up in it.

actually - this is a very valid point and i agree - also we need to tackle illegal drivers as they probably cause more problems that older drivers! Z

if i thought my eyesight/health was detiorating i wouldnt want to put others at risk, but i can see that having a car gives us a freedom...

Drivers at 70 years old have to have a form signed by their doctors to say they are still fit to drive, I personally think this should be an examination from a government doctor. I myself passed my test at 52, I still keep upto date with changes in the highway code and driving laws, I subscribe to a website for this. But if I thought I was not upto driving I would pack in myself. Older drivers are not always the worst on the road, however I see some every day that are not on the same planet nevermind the same road.

Dad had to go for medical regularly after he hit 70 to make sure he was fit enough to drive.....they should've checked more than his healtth....took his "test" during the war with the Navy...he said it consisted of them making sure he could drive forwards and backwards....test passed...he drove like a fecking lunatic!!!!!

i think every driver should re sit their test every 5years,a lot of bad habits and complacency are picked up over time, its notjust old people that need to refresh their driving skills,we all do.

Maybe something along the lines of if you have been caught Driving badly so many times you have to re sit a Test of some sort no matter what your age ?

isnt that already in place with the penalty point system,so many points, lose your license, thenresit yr test?

I think that's only for new Drivers

new drivers have to serve a 2 year probationary period if you do something wrong you only have 6 points to play with instead of 12 for more experianced drivers. If you lose these you will have to apply for you provisional again and start all over again. That applies to all new drivers of any age

"50 and above! Half on them passed a test that only included starting the engine and driving round a corner!"

You may have a point son as these new fangled contraptions have keys INSIDE the car! When I passed my test, before you were born, I had to crank up the engine from outside the car! Before that just needed a lump of sugar for the horse!

Controversial i know but i personally don't think that people should be able to drive until they are 21 and even then they should have to have a test to determine their level of anger control and maturity

Also they should be restricted to a maximum 1200cc car until they have been accident and incident free for at least 3 years

I drive over 250 miles a week with my business and and the things i see with younger drivers everyday make my toes curl xx

"50 and above! Half on them passed a test that only included starting the engine and driving round a corner!"

Don't forget we did it on a donkey too!

Your comment made me scream much louder than the 11 inch dong you offer ever would have. You see - It's not the size or age that matters. It's the amount of brain and physical ability behind the drivers eyes. ( now of course I meant vehicles... tut )

I am an advanced driver and tend not to blame others all the time.

An honest look at their own driving is what all ages should be doing.

Those who say statistically it's young males who have and cause the most accidents are correct.

Serious Q... If a Chinese Man crashes a car. Is it because he's Chinese ?

Note: ( There are other races and nationalities available. Feel free to substitute the one of your choice )

Every 10 years from passing your test and every 5 after 60. You also turn up for the retest with a safe to drive chitty from your doctor.

Rules and changes happen all the time, if you don't keep up to date, so what, at least a test will make you look at your driving and re read the highway code, especially give way and motorway driving

That's the problem with comments from kids, they don't think it will apply to them.

If you loose your licence you have lost your license, and have to retake the whole tests, theory and practical. so your back to square one, and with not being able to claim any no claims, how your license is only 2 years old etc....Harsh but... DO you want the roads safer?

I hear what you're saying Mrs HPC, and it makes me go grrrrrrrr aswell, but some of em do it cos it pisses off car users, lol.... personally, I only do it on a 3 lane motorway, or if it's downhill, and I can go faster if Im heavier, lol......

luton

the facts speak for themselves

the insurance companys know who are the safest drivers , and my insurance for a 2.5 litre saab is only 250 quid

my son of 30 pays 1000 quid for his escort 3rd party lol

the most dangerous drivers on the road are the young immigrants that dont even have a license , cos there only used to driving tractors on the other side of the road

and they are half asleep on there way to work picking asparagus at 4 am in the morning
