It's Thursday 
Not first responders ... but
what's with this proliferation of blue lights on vehicles ? Especially wagons 
Bloody distracting when you catch them in the corner of your eye whilst driving  |

I was behind a taxi on Saturday night and it was lit up like a xmas tree inside chaser rope lights on the ceiling and around the back windows surely that cant be legal.it was very distracting |

Strictly speaking they're not road legal.
Light from the front should be white from the headlights and amber from the indicators, light from the back should be red from the brake/running lights, white from the reverse and amber from the indicators. Everything else is breaking the law.... |

Only emergency vehicles can use them and I'm surprised the police aren't stricter in enforcing it. |

I can't really comment on that one as I used to run red light covers on the front of my R6 at one time, always got spotted though by cars.
Also got spotted by the coppers who told me off for having them  |

Some are and some aren't. Years ago I had blue sidelight bulbs in my Cosworth, they were in place for about 3 days before I got pulled...lol
Another consideration are aftermarket HID headlight kits, they're a cheap and effective light upgrade and available for most vehicles but require headlight washers and self leveling systems to make them properly road legal.
While we're on the subject, New MOT regs coming into force in February will affect anyone driving a diesel that's had the DPF removed and deleted. According to the new regs any vehicle fitted with one at point of production must have one in place at all times (many people have them removed because they fail and are expensive to replace). Thankfully its only a visual check so you can fit one that has had the internals removed. |

If they're illegal to have switched on whilst driving then the police aren't doing much about it 
Surely they'd make so much money and meet quotas from on the spot fines 
But aren't they a distraction to the driver themselves ? |

Some of our trucks have blue led lights on a bar on the roof . Its not illegal . As long as we have 4 white lights ( 2 side lights at the bottom and 2 top marker lights ) you can have as many other lights as you like on the front as long as there not red |

Not sure about HGV's but they're illegal on cars (for road use). I'll double check the minefield that is the VOSA site.... |

see, i still remember reading my highway code, although not sure if its only about flashing lights, but red to the rear, white to the front, yellow shows movement indication, blue is emergency services, green is doctor, no others are allowed.
now, as a driver of these large vehicles, i hate with a passion these xmas tree drivers.
i have asked, and still havent gotten an answer, we get to fund the VOSA xmas party to the tune of £60 for a bulb out, now does this include if these moving decorations have bulbs out, cuz if so, the driver could be down thousands of pounds.... |

Your only allowed red light at the front of command vehicles. It will be either green, blue or yellow flashing beacon,with a red stripe , the red stripe indicates that the driver of that vehicle is in charge |

It's my understanding that only blue flashing lights can be used and are legally recognised on public highways as requiring other vehicles to give way. All other coloured flashing lights are for warning purposes only, or for use on private land such as airports, military areas etc.
A blue flashing light on an emergency vehicle gives the driver certain exemptions under the Road Traffic Act. The driver would have to hold a qualification under the emergency driving clause of the Act usually taken following the Roadcraft regulations. |
