Ok, I've finally gone and done it and bought a bike with the aim of doing a triathlon in the summer and maybe a 200 mile charity ride over 3 days in July. Been a few years since I'd ridden one but quite enjoyed the first outing even though I was properly knackered after a short 5 mile ride so definitely need to get properly training. Thing is my arse was bloody uncomfortable, any tips to make it feel a bit less painful? Or do I just have to get used to it?

I had the same problem last year when I did a 20 mile ride for charity, I had not ridden for probable 20 years. Gel seat and lots of riding

Road, can't see myself being an off road person, and the triathlons are all road based, will need to be able to do 20km for that and probably 100km in a day if I do the charity ride. The idea sounded great until I was blowing out of my backside after 20 mins today!

You will get used to it.

What distance is the tri in terms of each discipline ?

At least charity ride is over 3 days. My friends & I do a 40 mile one every year , but there are lots of pit stops on the way !

I've just started again aswell. I've done 40 miles since Wednesday.

I have a mountain bike, definitely need a road bike aswell in the winter!

I have started doing some stretching, squats and press-ups in the morning to help build strength a little.

Could do with more weight to add to the squats but heyho.

Apart from that I am just making sure I ride regular. Almost everyday apart from the odd rest days which will be dictated by my shift work...

Goodluck!

750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run. Have done the swim before as part of a team event but looking to do all 3 disciplines this year.

Get a decent chair on it, take sum vas or drapolene incase. Mite be an idea to get a turbo trainer as well. Stand up every mile or so to pedal, numb cock isnt funny. Also, the girlies like a tite firm botti ( see diagram )

Am definitely hoping a bit of toning and weight loss will result. And numb cock sounds awful!

Don't bother with a gel seat, it's actually just better to get your 'arse fitness' from sitting on the saddle. It's like any kind of activity, if you hadn't done it for a while it's bound to get sore for a bit. Don't try to push it and just aim for distance without timing it. You'll notice it takes less and less time each outing and then it gets fun trying to beat yesterday's time. I would suggest bib shorts as they are really comfortable. I would also suggest spd pedals and shoes or cleats as it makes it so much easier when hill climbing because you can keep your cadence up. Xx

I cycle 80-100 miles à week thats just for fun, and I enjoy it, for an entry level bike I recommend specialized, they are good quality and not overly expensive, plus customisable/upgradable, I never get a sore arse or numb cock......... Ain't worked out why,

Ohhhh I love cycling and at the moment I am saving for a Merida, I have a Fuji but I love the Merida bikes.

Unfortunately you just have to keep riding to get over the sore bum bone feeling and the numb pussy feeling after 25 miles but the shorts do help. I started doing 6 miles then 10 then 15 etc, you will get there, happy cycling

Yes I totally agree, time in the saddle is the best way to get used to it.

And clipped in pedals do make a big difference. They're easier to get used to than you think ! Although I had few tumbles my first few attempts, as I forgot I was clipped in ! Much to the amusement of my so called friends !!!!

If you need to stand up every mile o avoid a "numb cock" you need to get your position sorted out

Gel seats are a waste of time. Decent shorts make a masiive difference. Make sure the saddle is flat and not pointing up or down. Make sure the height of the saddle is right. But even with all that you still have to get used to it. If after a few rides you are still getting discomfort it could be that the saddle just isn't for you.

As for being shattered after such a short ride, put it in to perspective, you wouldn't expect to run 5miles if you hadn't run for years. The first ride will always be a shock. The key to getting fitter in the short term is riding little and often. And spin a little gear rather than go out all guns blazing.

More serious advise for a beginner is to ride, ride and ride. you will improve very quickly to start with just from riding on a regular basis.

Most important thing is have a confortable position, if you need any position advise take a side on and front on pic of you on your bike and I can have a look at it.

The above offer is valid for anyone else.....if your a good looking girl you can even come to my garage and ill sort your position for you!

"Out of interest if you were looking at a make like specialized how much would you expect to spend on a decent entry level bike?"

Specialised offer notoriously bad value for money.

At this time of year try and find something from 2013 with a big reduction.

But decent is subjective. Decent enough to do what sort of riding?

£1000

id buy something from a less well known brand. I rode a bike that cost around 1000 in a few elite road races last year. my specialized of a similar spec cost me about 5 times that

I cycle quite a lot. But I I take some time out I can be quite 'saddle sore' Just a case of getting used to it I'm afraid. Won't take long. The more frequent the ride, the less hard it is and that applies to fitness also.

Do you really need to spend that sort of money on a cycle for a bit of general keep fit riding?

If you're not doing serious offroading or road racing is there much benefit of spending that much?

I've worked in the house of the guy that sells specialised cycles for the my area and judging by the house there is plenty of profit in them...

I regularly compete in triathlons. You arse will hurt for a while until you're used to the saddle...just stick with it, don't give up and invest in a DECENT pair of padded cycling shorts.

Once you get used to short rides, you then need to start doing longer rides. Even if you're used to the saddle, if you do a greater distance that you're not used to, your arse will let you know!

It's even worse for us women.. But I guess you could say I'm kinda tough down there now!
