Just been sent a like to an article which says:
Motorists that sell cars privately will not be entitled to offer the “unexpired tax” incentive from October 2014, the Automobile Association has revealed. Sellers will have to claim vehicle excise duty refunds for any remaining months from the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Buyers will then have to pay road tax online, at post offices or via telephone before taking to the road. Why? Because the paper tax disc that has graced windscreens for nearly a century will soon be consigned to history.
How will when you borrow a friends or family or even hire a car, will you know the car has road tax?????

and will this tag be able to record when I go? like your oyster card keeps a record of journeys you make?

You could always ask the owner of the car?!
It's largely because of ANPR...why mess with paper tax discs when a camera & computer can tell you if the car is taxed or not, plus there won't be any issues with fake tax discs.

Will lead to people only selling cars at the turn of the month, so the seller doesnt loose a lot of the months tax when he sells a car, and the buyer doesnt loose out taxing at the end of the month |

I know when you drive into the City of London the cameras see you enter/leave the area.... I always feel funny going through those cameras....

Can't imagine may people loosing out on a sale for the sake of a maximum of £30! If you cash a tax disc now you still only get complete months refunded, not the remainder of the current month too |

also gets around folk not registering the vehicle to themselves to dodge tickets etc as you will have to provide address and insurance etc
good thing if it helps stop uninsured and dodgy drivers |

Can't imagine may people loosing out on a sale for the sake of a maximum of £30! If you cash a tax disc now you still only get complete months refunded, not the remainder of the current month too"
But it will proliferate the loss of complete months for us all.
If we have such a fancy, amazing system of taxation, then surely we should be able to offer each other a refund to the day, not losing the remainder of a month.
I use terminology like us and we deliberately. After all it's ours isn't it? |

They stopped this for motor traders being able to claim the tax back for cars that they take in a few years back.
There will always be ways around it like signing the motor trademarks slip rather than the new keepers part so the tax can stay on the car. Then when the tax expires sending off the log book to be made the new keeper.
It's just another money making idea so when you sell a car say mid month they get the money for that month off the old keeper plus that month off the new keeper so they get paid twice for the car being on the road.
They are always going to find a way to screw you out of money so you need to be a bit clever and find a legal way around it. Just like people did with the motor traders policies for the insurance. |

Approx 3.6 million second hand cars are sold in the uk every year so even if they get double tax for 50% of them at say £30 a month tax that is over 50m extra revenue |

As I understand it, this OP is just about the changeover period! If a car is taxed with a disc, you will have to reclaim that part of the tax that is unused, subject to current legislation from Oct 2014.
Once the new system is in force, you will be able to take over the tax already paid for on the car. It will be up to you to check it is taxed by looking on-line with the cars details. This is purely to clean up the changeover... |
