What's mifi?

mifi is a over the phone internet connection just like on a phone. But unlike a phone any wireless laptop or pc printer can connect to it. Also more than one laptop can be connected at the same time.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Are you getting a whole thingy or just a dongle until you are sorted?

My friend got a dongle from his phone provider for travelling as part of the contract.

In laymans (Moody) terms. A wireless internet dongle

Depending on what mobile phone you have you should be able to connect to the internet via that. On my HTC smart phone there was a hotspot connection you could use which was located where you look at the wireless / blue tooth etc.

On my current phone its a wifi hotspot. So as long as you have the data to use on your mobile contract you can use that x

If you have the non sim iPad version you are right. It will only connect wirelessly.

I think its the pink dongle you need. Then you won't be bothered about the speed as long as it's connected

No, not so much. It's called tethering.

The computer or tablet connects to the phone which acts like a modem.

Think back to ye olden days when your computer was connected to a modem which had to dial up to connect to the Internet.

Now you can connect your computer/tablet to your phone which connects to the Internet. It doesn't have to dial-up anymore but the idea is the same.

The principle is pretty basic. Have a box of some sort that can connect with the internet and connect your computer/tablet to that.

It's the same for broadband where the router or modem is the box that connects.

Central

Some networks permit tethering, others dont. You can get away with it, on those that prohibit it, but better to use as allowed. Dongles and data service is all good, as its meant for that purpose.

Does tethering not count as mifi?

I use a Huwei mifi, unlocked from Amazon, and use a giff gaff databag when I go on hols. Just plug the sim in and go, works a treat, battery last four hours, and upto 5 devices connected.

I started a thread on this a couple of weeks ago, the general consensus was mifi with a payg with 3 or giffgaff

I didn't get to find out which was the best dongle to use

Unless your going to try to attach more than a couple of users you don't need a 4G one so I would recommend a Huwaei E5331 about £40, unlocked. Use a standard micro USB charger like the one for your one to power it, when not charging your phone, and it will be always on.

We have tried one or 2 of these new technologies and they are ok if you are just surfing the net and checking e-mails. If you are downloading alot of content or Gaming then stay away really laggy and not very fast download speeds

If you have a smart phone why don't you have a temporary tethering package from your provider? At the end if the day that's all mifi is. I got it with my mobile package with orange and my dad has an orange mifi dongle and there's no difference in speed or connection at all

Tidy

You can get round the block by using a proxy web server.

Alternately, go through your phone, it's really easy.

If you get a dongle, 3 are the best providers and their coverage is good
