It's a metal illness which involve mania (absurd highs) and depression (absurd lows).

Most people vary between these two poles but on a spectrum. People who suffer from Bi Polar Depression are either Manic or depressed with very little time spent between.

As was said, it's a very serious illness.

The clue is in the name. The polarities of a persons mental health are in the high and low extremities - feelings of extreme high elation and severe low depression. That's it in a very small nutshell, there's so much in between. Quite common in comedians apparently.

It can involve the sufferer experiencing highs which can cause them to spend cash they don't have, become involved in risky behaviour, feel they can achieve anything etc.....to a crashing low of the worst depression.

Often the person can spend longer putting things right and repairing relationships that suffered when they were 'high' than they ever spent ill.

Horrible illness

no disrespect to sufferers family or friends ! but is it sometimes used as scapegoat in courts of law for bad behaviour? I read it alot esp from celebs claiming to suffer from it! can it be properly diagnosed or can it be simply claimed that they suffer bpd

BPD and Bipolar are very similar in nature. Don't think that BPD is any less serious, it's not...10% of people with this will commit suicide.

Both are serious mental health illnesses, and it can be difficult to tell them apart.

little house on the praire

There are numerous types of bi polar. Some may only have one episode in their life some every day. My diagnosis is severe bipolar type one rapid cycle syndrome (mixed mood) with a borderline personality disorder running along the side. I get very unwell and I'm. Onitered all the time. But its not as easy as just saying bipolar

I am a manic depressive (bipolar) and I rapid cycle, I am lucky to still be alive because with my illness it is rare to make it past ones 40s (however with the latest generation of anti psychotics this is changing). It is also rare for it to be used as a defense in court (many sufferers are diagnosed in prison after being found guilty of criminal acts while in manic states). Also it is quite common for bi-polar sufferers to be misdiagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia. We have a tendency to hide our illness (and are usually very good at it because we are normally quite intelligent), and we also have a tendency to self medicate.

I have to say having read some of the posts above it is no wonder we still tend to hide in the shadows as it is clear from some of the opinions above that there is a vast chasm of ignorance and prejudice out there, which is a shame because with a very simple google search all the information is there.

Stephen Fry made a good documentary called The secret life of the manic depressive, it's on Youtube if you want to see it.

OP, as is so often the case Google is your friend. If you're concerned for yourself or a friend, it's useful to get some basic knowledge of the subject.

Besides the obvious effects it has on the sufferer, it's also sad to see a friend struggling with it. And as has been said, there seems to be a link with intelligence. I'm no expert, but self-denial also seems to be an issue.

"I'm no expert, but self-denial also seems to be an issue."

I can only speak for myself in this, but its not self denial its a simple fact of trying to fit in and hiding your illness. We learn from an early age to hide the parts of our illness we are aware of. That bi-polar sufferers are also lightly to registrar on the autistic spectrum and will have learned to protect themselves since childhood is quite often overlooked.

It is only in the past 5 years I have got help, prior to that I had a bad manic episode in my 20s that caused me to seek help. The result was a stay in a mental ward and a doctor more interested in committing me and blaming my use of controlled drugs for my behavior than doing his job. I of course freaked out and immediately started giving the answers they wanted to hear to get out. I had another bad episode in my early 40s where again I went looking for help, on that occasion I was again totally freaked out and ran for cover when I found myself in a room with 2 mental nurses who were saying I needed to be sectioned as I was schizophrenic!

I was diagnosed with Bi-polar disorder just over 6 years ago. I have bad times and good times, most people would never guess unless they became close friends. I've made a lot of mistakes, but NEVER blamed my condition! I don't know anyone else who suffers from it who has either, but I can't speak for everyone.

I have never hid my condition from anyone, I don't broadcast it to every Tom, Dick and Harry, but if it comes up in conversation, I'll always be honest, and if I think someone should know (potential partner, close friend etc) I'll tell them.

I'm not ashamed of it, nor do I believe that I or anyone else who suffers from a mental illness should be! It makes me who I am, and while I can be a little emotional, hyper, extreme, manic (or however you want to put it) sometimes, I know I'm a good person with a good heart

"If you can't handle me at my worst, you don't deserve to see me at my best!"

It also depends on the severity/ type 1 and 2

A lot of time can be spent between for some people

i have been told i may be, but its bollocks as i know people that are, and they can be very bad, as has been said.

we all have highs and lows in life, its how you manage them.

i think it actually cheapens the illness to say you are bi polar simply because you have mood swings.

Would it not be better if you went on the nhs website and read from a more informed source? Or google NICE guidelines as they give a preamble about condition

At the risk of stating the obvious, mental health/ illness diagnosis isn't an exact science.

Only yesterday a chap, accused of a serious crime, had three psychiatrists unable to agree on his illness (if any).

My now x (still very close) was diagnosed with bipolar at 15 she was left to fester in the system on the wrong meds being shoved from pillar to post which allowed it to morph into ABPD which she is now getting the right help with, it is something that can never be cured but its all about learning to deal with it WITH THE RIGHT HELP.

Unless you have lived closely with someone with either condition you will never know the full extent of these.

I am writing this sat in a docs waiting room coz after years of dealing with it, it breaks you down seriously mentally and physically! Mental health is a serious issue that has been underestimated for years!

I have 2 really good friends that suffer with bipolar disorder. The one seems to be under control now through meds because he hasn't had an episode for years, but the other one has never seemed to be under control no matter what meds he takes. And he is extreme with his highs and lows, I have learned I've the years to recognise his behaviour and can always tell when he's coming into a bad episode, he'll suddenly get very ambitious and buy expensive things such as cars, computers, music instruments. Last big one he had a custom Warwick bass guitar made for him and it cost about 6k. And a couple of days after that he will hit the low and cut himself, threaten friends and take whatever drugs he can get his hands on, usually , and a few days after that the regret and self disgust kicks in and then fine for a few months.

I am keeping away from him at the moment because I'm not mentally strong enough to cope with him myself due to the past few years but I used to get him seen to when he was in an episode.and it breaks my heart everytime to see him go through it because he just can't explain why it happens and he hates himself for what he does.

Funny enough both these friends are perhaps genius level in thier intellect and both are genius musicians. They do say its the blight of genius though
