"Haven't managed to sit through Django don't think I'll be watching this either.
Django was nothing. I considered walking out of 12years a slave"
I'm in the process of reading the book and have seen the film. Both are very good in my opinion. |

I've seen half the film so far, going to sit and watch the rest tonight. I'm really enjoying it, but I've no idea why someone compared it to Django, completely different types of films! |

Although completely different films, both are based on the black slave trade.
I'm going to see 12 years a Slave next week. |

Well they look at very different aspects of it, and it's a huge subject and the films are completely different in what they try to achieve. Can't see the comparison myself but that's just me, I'm fussy! |

I argue that although the films have very different stories slavery played a big part in both & that it's pretty clear. |

I was saddened more by thinking about Slavery & my ancestors but didn't get choked up or anything watching Django. 12years has a stronger, more obvious focus on slavery and that was hard to watch. |

More importantly 12 years a slave is a true story - or rather based on a true story as the film does edit out some events and details probably so the film isn't over long. Django was somewhat a sensationalist fiction. For example, there was no such thing as mandingo fighting. |

Ye this why it made sad rather by just making me just think about slavery. |

Oloudah Equiano's narrative is very good too. His description of being captured in Africa and the experience of a slave ship is unforgettable. |

Perhaps not as depicted in the film but there are many examples of former slaves excelling as prize fighters. Probably the most famous was Tom Molyneux who declared himself World Champion in the days of bare knuckle fighting. |

The book has even more details about what happened to him. You can download it free as it's not under copyright. |

Yeah but Django was a revenge flick, a feelgood flick. Bad people got their commeupance and the worse they were the worse their death! It wasn't about slavery, slavery was just a story device used to make the violence and revenge acceptable.
12 years was specifically about slavery and the pain and suffering, endurance through hope or painful acceptance. Some fought the system from the start, some bided time.
But I think what it portayed the most was the varying degrees of humanity from different people in different situations. Black and white. |

And whilst here for the best part, in the west, we live a "civilised" existence. That barbarity is alive and well to this day. |

Saw it yesterday, I cried a few times and Smiled at a few times....
Smiled when Solomon got the upper hand on his "masters"
Wish I had a warning over the hanging scene though, having had an ex depart via this method, I burst out crying at the shock/memeriores and emotions the film brought....
9 out of 10 for me as there was one scene I didn't get...... |

When you watch a film about slavery it's likely you'll see a hanging or two..
What scene didn't you get? |

There was one aspect of the film that irked me somewhat, but I can't put what as it'd contain spoilers! And it was more to do with the film-making than the story.
It's still not the best of the Oscar nominations I've seen this year though, as I though both Dallas Buyers Club and The Wolf on Wall Street were better films.
It is better than American Hustle and Her though! |

one towards the end green blured background and Solomon's face for what felt like ages...... I said to person I went with, what was point of that and he shrugged.....
I do realise this but sort of forgot! watched the Goonies when I got home first scene of that is someone hanging too! |
