The Wire is my favourite, particularly series 1,3 and 4.
One of few tv shows that doesn't treat an audience as if their stupid, really good dialogue between characters. Gritty realism with no room for sentiment.
Honourable mentions:
Sopranos
Breaking Bad
Sons of Anarchy (yet to complete)
X-Files (the first tv show I became hooked on as a teenager)
I also found Fringe, 24, Prison Break and House fun to watch, though they weren't particularly layered nor intricate and episodes were a little 'samey' at times.

I started watching it recently (finished it all now) I found it to be a slow burner for the first two or three episodes but stick with it. |

Sopranos-15 years old and still awesome
The Wire-very well written.
The Shield-One of the best cop shows I've seen.
Deadwood-A badass western show that could be measured in swear words per minute
Breaking Bad-Best thing I've watched in a while. And like the product in the show, it's addictive.
Adventure Time-yes it's a cartoon but it's not really for kids.

I've only ever watched the Sopranos all the way through. I normally give up after a few episodes.
Other programmes I've enjoyed and want to watch all the way through are
Modern Family
Deadwood
Broadwalk Empire
The one I'm really enjoying at the moment though is Duck Dynasty but I don't think that'll be winning any Grammys. |

"Breaking Bad
Dexter (although the last episode was awful)
The Wire
The Shield
Life (American cop show starring Damien Lewis)"
Life was excellent but cancelled as network had to cut something as Jay Leno wanted more money! |

Of Band of Brothers was good, wasn't there a follow up..... Pacific???"
Yes there was ~ I watched it but didn't think it had quite the same edge as Band of Brothers. |

"The best by far is a series called firefly absolutely amazing
But sadly not even a whole series! "
well at least the film serenity finished it
it would make a welcome cumback in my eyes though...even if it lacks my techscifi likes |

I don't feel it finished it properly - they were originally planning a trilogy of films |
