With snow on the way (one day) do you know how to drive your rear wheel drive car in it?
Do you know what that even means? (I once saw a guy putting stones/ sticks etc under the REAR tyres of his VW GOLF to help his wife move it on a muddy campsite. |

vast majority of cars are front wheel now anyway, and people still dont know how to drive them.
i live at the bottom of a steep hill, and the amount of people that creep up to the bottom, then stamp on the gas to try and get up, only to come back down sideways is as hilarious as it is annoying.
i drive like a loon up to the hill, then coast up, but 8 times out of 10 have to stamp on the anchors and slide to a halt as im faced with a micra sliding back down at me.
fucks me right off |

I drive a Yaris and it's amazing how many places I can get it in the snow. It's a wonderful car for bad weather.
I used to drive an Orion and the back end was always coming out in bad weather. I ended up chucking a big bag of coal in the boot one winter |

Usually find a couple stuck in the verges round here each time it snows when they discover they can still skid off the road. |

bog standard corsa 1.2 no problems in the snow narrow tyres cut through the slush and grip NEVER got stuck in the time i had it used to laugh at all the shiney beemers and mercs abandoned at the bottom of our local hill as i sailed by .
remember reversing up one hill that everybody was stuck on all the weight on the driven wheels = lots of grip easy
now if you want to try something "interesting " in the snow try the old rear engine skodas fantastic fun ! |

Winter tyres make the world of different, very highly recommended.
Letting tyre pressures down a bit also helps and be smooth and progressive with accelerating and braking.
Cadence brake if you are skidding
If you get stuck do not floor it, rock the car back and forth (hard not to think dirty thoughts here) and you will get out eventually
Get winter tyres though!! |

reminds me of some old news footage of one of the times in snowed in Australia (possibly Sydney but dont quote me) a camera crew approached a guy in an old Holden v8 with his foot to the floor just sat wheel spinning, they asked what on earth he was up to to which he replied "Melting my way down to the taarmac! Streuth! Tie me kangaroo dahn!"
( I have embellished his statement somewhat). |

"My car is rear wheel drive and has winter tyres on - so far so good.
Great choice (and expensive) did you do all 4 wheels?"
Yes all 4 wheels have been done. Have a family member who works at BMW so always get a good deal, well worth it though. |

can i just say, if you are on the motorway and its snowing, move into the left hand lane and crawl along with all the others, please.
i have 40 tonne pushing me through the snow. i can go a little faster, safer than cars can.
its only causes a problem when mr bmw sits doing 20 in the middle lane because the left hand lane isnt a bmw lane lol |

it's a pain when they clear some roads, but not all of them so you have to keep stopping and taking them off again. |

I think it is called "lift off over steer" when you lift off the gas in a corner and the rear starts to oversteer. This happens in front wheel drive cars. |

For HGV drivers (myself included) it's called getting your own back! still with straight cut, near slick tyres that you find on most of the civvy wagons these days you need forward planning of about a mile in snow! |

A few years ago I was driving back to England from Scotland over the borders when we got caught in a snow storm. Pretty soon the motorway started covering over making driving difficult. I was in a Fiat coupe turbo with 235 tyres which meant I had to drive very carefully in the left lane at a speed appropriate to the conditions to be safe. Until an absolute knobhead in an hgv came right up my arse lights blazing. Mr wank splat then thought a few blasts on his horn and full beam might help me on my way. Bearing in mind the by now deep snow in the middle lane mr twat chops then decided to pass so close the car was covered in snow blinding me while still helpfully blowing his horn.
Off he went and I stayed safe. Noted his reg. Imagine my pleasure when the road cleared and I could get the speed back up and who should I come across heading into the services? Toss bag was soon smiling on the other side of his face.
The moral........there are knobheads in cars hgv s white vans .......in general there are knobheads out there |

Nope - old series 4 scanny!! Would go out with the council when they forgot to grit one of the hills, 4 bulk bags of salt on the back, 4 blokes with shovels throwing it behind me as I reversed it up the hill. The back axle ground the salt into the snow and ice and the third axle would grip and keep me moving! Was the best thing I've ever driven in snow |

True, but then the good ones of us out there are happy to run the salt into the snow and ice to help it work and keep the road clear for lighter cars and vans |

True true and true again, the worst out there are often those who call the open road their "office" they think they've seen and done it all so so should everyone else or getoutdaway! Taxi drivers included. But not Ice cream van men, those lovable rouges! |

I love how 4x4 drivers think they are exempt from the issues of snow and drive round like clowns, traction isn't always the problem, it's the stopping! 4 wheel drive doesn't help you with that |

True. If you're the kind of motorist who'd buy one I'd hope you'd know exactly what it does! |

"I drive a Yaris and it's amazing how many places I can get it in the snow. It's a wonderful car for bad weather.
I used to drive an Orion and the back end was always coming out in bad weather. I ended up chucking a big bag of coal in the boot one winter
Blimy, they were front wheel drive weren't they?
I think it is called "lift off over steer" when you lift off the gas in a corner and the rear starts to oversteer. This happens in front wheel drive cars.
I used to stick about 15 boxes of computer listing paper in the boot of my Opal Manta, many years ago!
now theres a sexy car i wouldnt mind trying to get my hands on"
I used to have a Manta GTJ .....many many happy days |

"Love how everyone thinks they are amazing drivers in the snow
everyone?? " front wheel rear wheel or 4x4 only way to be good at driving in the snow and ice is practice!! So in the UK nobody is good at it as we never get enough time to learn.
If you want to go out and play please don't abandon your car on the side of the road especially not on hills cos I am not good in the snow but can manage on clear roads if I really have to. |

Well said far too many go out with a blase attitude and get stuck abandoning cars in places that crate nightmares for the guys keeping the road clear. Also the bit about experience is right too a 4x4 slides down an icy road pretty much the same as a front or rear wheel drive car. There isn't a safe option what ever you drive if you are not taking care you can have it in a ditch. |

"Love how everyone thinks they are amazing drivers in the snow
I love how 4x4 drivers think they are exempt from the issues of snow and drive round like clowns, traction isn't always the problem, it's the stopping! 4 wheel drive doesn't help you with that
of course it does, you're engine braking across 4 wheels.... "
But how many people engine brake when they realise there is a hazard in front? Their instinct is to hit the brakes, and voila scrap metal |

I was taught to drive off road in a Daihatsu with one caliper missing, so if you did use the footbrake you'd spin rather interestingly. Soon learned to engine brake.... |

"my Audi has ridiculous sized wheels and the mere sight of snow brings it to a grinding halt.....so embarrassing!"
My Audi has 19" alloys with low profile tyres.....it's not great in the snow but I've not been stuck........yet!!!!!
I drive a gritter through the winter months, cos they're useless during the summer lol, and the amount of people that I see driving without taking road conditions into consideration is unbelievable. In adverse conditions it's worth giving yourself extra time to make your journey. In freezing conditions, if the temp drops below -8 the salt/grit on the road does NOT work as efficiently, so take extra care when driving. |

"we can go any where 4x4 lol "
It's amazing how many people think that cos they're in a 4x4 they can get anywhere in bad weather but forget to learn how to drive in bad weather! I see an awful lot of them getting stuck or skidding into other vehicles when it shows around here because the drivers think that having a 4x4 means they can drive as they would if there was no snow. |

I don't have a RWD car so I don't have to worry about driving a RWD car in snow.
I did used to drive a 250bhp Subaru Impreza (with wide-ish low profile tyres) in snow. Yes, they're 4WD but trust me, Scoobs are not made for snow and ice! I still did a lot better than many other drivers and never had even a near miss, (other than seeing cars sliding up behind me and wondering if they were going to be able to stop).
I've now got a much less powerful FWD car with narrower tyres. It's a lot easier to drive in snow, but much less fun overall. |

"try Driving a Veron in the Snow lol,Ended up getting a Honda Civic hybrid to tow me out..gets the old blood flowing tho "
I would pay huge amounts of money to have seen that!
I was surprised at how well my Alfa did in last year's snow. Didn't get stuck once, all I did was swap the 18" wheels for 16" wheels with standard (not winter) tyres. |

I would argue that is exactly the sort of conditions that an Impreza is designed for... The tyre choice would make a big difference though... |

a fwd with winter tyres is better than awd with summer tyres
no one in the uk gets enough practice to be good in the snow.
around buxton every year you see abandoned 4x4's because people think its fun to take them out and crash them because they are not the be all and end all in snow and ice |

Winter tyres are a gimmick. Most parts of England don't get serve enough weather for them to make much of a difference. I would consider them if I lived in Scotland though. |

Apart from the fact I stand by my comment that no matter which or how many wheels are driven, lack of practice will make us all bad snow drivers... has anyone seen the weather forecast? stuff the 4x4 get a BOAT

It's knowing what you and your car can do in the snow ...
A few years ago, we had a decent snowfall for here, and I was driving a proper Mini
Hill ahead, and spotted a few cars not moving, so stopped before the hill started, where a tree had stopped the snow getting on the road.
Thought they'd got stopped as someone couldn't turn right, as they'd probably lost traction.
Two 4x4's, a big Audi, and a big BMW overtook me, and got stuck !
I then made sure the opposite side was clear, set off in first, quickly into second and then third, and sailed past the lot of them !!!!
The looks on their faces, sat in their expensive boxes on wheels .... |

Moral of the story...
Only travel in bad snow if you have to. Don't drive like a knob. Leave yourself plenty of time. Regardless of what effin car you drive!! Ego's much?
Far to easy to sit behind a screen and pretend you're the worlds best driver!
It's human nature to act on that moment in time, hindsight is a wonderful thing!
What does matter is that you and
everyone else around you is safe!

Personally I don't think Porsche, Audi, BMW, Volvo etc make 4x4s... They make AWDs. Their cars are not made to go off road. They are fast big estates...
These cars are bought purely as status symbols instead of other large executive cars. The drivers often have no idea how the car works.... They and other non 4x4 drivers should stay off the roads and leave them free for those of us who know how to drive our 4x4s and need to get out what ever the weather... |

I have driven in snow in my FWD and a 4x4 struggled !!
Don't put all 2 wheeled drive car drivers in the same pigeon hole ...
My landlord has a 4x4, and I asked him if he knew how to get the safest best out of it in snow, and he had no idea ...
For those who can get the best out of the 4x4's safely in the snow -
