Actually, for me it always has been and probably always will be Luciano Pavarotti. Distinct, unique and the epitomy of Italian (and other) opera.

One of my favourite topics.. and one of our loveliest experiences was in July last year... sitting in a hot tub with a lovely sexy couple, having a drink with amazing opera in the background.. It was unforgettable and sexy.. even if one was not an opera fan....

Often so called classical music becomes popular through being used in a commercial.. I am thinking of British Airways, Baileys, John Lewis etc...

Bryn Terfel

Felicity Palmer

Christine Brewer

Gerald Finley

Toresten Kerl

Dame Kiri

Simon Keenlyside.

Tho it does help that Mrs R sings in a very serious choir. There really, REALLY is a difference between proper Opera singers and the famous ones like Bocelli and Jenkins. In the same way as David Coverdale, Robert Plant and Rob Halford can sing the socks off McFly, JLS etc. That Pop star to Opera star thing was a case in point, only Marcella Detroit could sing in tune. Car crash tv in this household lol. In fairness SuBo can sing quite well.

Yes, both Bocelli and Jenkins have done this.. brought music to the masses and that in itself is great. Classical music and opera etc should be available to anybody... not just be associated with upper middle class snobbery...

It's great that they and Mylene Klass etc have brought it to the masses and made it less elitist. I'd never been to the Opera til Mrs R took me. It's great theatre, and very reminiscent of a great rock band like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin or Thin Lizzy. Now I love seeing her orchestra and chorus at full tilt doing Verdi's Dies Irae, after singing the Requiem so quietly you can barely hear them and yet still projecting to the back of the concert hall. We forget that Opera was the equivalent of soaps or the X Factor back in the day.

The problem for the serious musicians is it dilutes all their years of hard work and study to hone their technique when a mobile phone salesman makes a mint out of an (at best) mediocre voice, but a good story. That's why it is elitist. No doubt serious acTORS would say the same thing about the stage and the telly.

Well is she the one that wears the floor to ceiling curtains and floats onto the stage like a battleship fog horn in full voice?

Must admit to having a perverse liking for the music of some of the ring cycle.

Nobody has mentioned Lesley Garrett. My best memory is her with Pauline Quirke and Linda Robson putting on a concert at a stately home. PQ has actually got a bit of a voice on her and she could probably have made as an opera singer too if she had persued it!
