This season it is not even a contest ....Ronaldo is simply out performing Lionel on the pitch !

Could be his tax issues off field

Could be Nemar is on field with him

But most likely Barcelona are simply not the team effective unit they were ! And that's probably because people have worked out how to play them and they have lost the fear factor .... A bit like Man U.

Messi is a technically more skillful player but Ronaldo is a better football player as he has proved when he plays without inesta alongside him !

Just my humble opinion

Very!

Messi has done so much but Ronaldo has won major tournaments playing in two different countries.

Would Messi be as effective playing the likes of Hull on a cold night in January?

Hull...............he'd bit them on his own .........

You never never ever see Messi dive , cheat , snake, moan , fake injury etc

Big difference ..................

Yeah, you say that but the game here is different from Spain. Also, lets not forget that an all-German final was played in the Champions league last year with both Real Madrid and Barcalona knocked out in the semi-finals by Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich respectively.

The debate will always be who is the better player out of these two and are they are the greatest footballers ever? You may pick one and then at yes to both. However:

1. Ronaldo has played in the English Premier League for several years, which in its day was the best league in the world. Messi will never get to the league now as no one can afford to buy him. Even Manchester City can't as they have to play by the fair trade rule, which stops them doing this. So unless Messi can/will take 600/700% pay cut and play in the English league like he does in Spain. Ronaldo should be considered the best.

2. Its hard to say whether these 2 are the best ever football players as firstly. Whose the better player, the best midfielder in the world or the best Striker? No one can say because its a team game. Secondly the game has changed so much you can't tackle as much any more. So if you have a bit of skill and a lot of speed, which these players do. Then most players can reach that level. (With a lot of work and dedication obviously). Place any footballing great/legend in their prime. Would you rate them better if the modern player played when they did?

Back on topic though. I think Messi would win it. Although I want Ronaldo too.

I think who you favour depends on the style of football you like..

Ronaldo is direct, strong, powerful and has taken physicality to another level...

Messi is graceful, intricate, subtle

In some ways, It's like the difference between Nadal and Federer. Both are exceptional.

I prefer Messi.

However, this years ballon d'or ought to go to Ronaldo...he's been the best player.

Just because Messi hasn't played In the premier league doesn't mean he shouldn't be considered as the best player ever.

How many English players have won the Ballon D'or and when was the last premier league player to win it ?

Our league may be more exciting than others but it doesn't come close regarding talent. Steve Claridge played in the premier league. Rooney is a donkey compared to Spanish or German middle of the road players.

In answer to the OP though I think Ronaldo will win it. Only because Messi has been injured though.

Fair point.

But Ronaldo is at the same level as Messi and that's one of the differences between them.

I didn't say Messi wouldn't cope. I simply raised the point for discussion.

Besides, we'll never know...

As Blackburn are playing at home and big teams tend not to play well/take their chances against the smaller sides. I will say it will take about an hour for man city to get going and then it will be goals galore for them. Failing that if Blackburn take their chances, even though they will be limited they will have a few. I can see them pulling off a shock, 1-0 or 2-1 to Blackburn. Well I can hope can't I? Lol.

They are both great players with different styles.

I feel Ronaldo has grown over the years and is the stronger player this year/season and deserves to win.

Some great comments for and against. I prefer Messi over Rinaldo and don't get me wrong they are the best 2 players in the world.

The reason being Messi is a player who is unassuming and a great team, where Ronaldo is an attention seeker and thinks everything should be played around him.

Ronaldo scored a goal in the same season he played against united in the champions league. Wasn't sure if what I saw was at that game though. Maybe someone can help me out on that . Basically he jumped several feet higher than any player surrounding him and he was in the air for what seem a while and it was a great goal. All commentators, fans, panel said that despite how world class messi is or has been in the past. He hasn't scored a goal like that, nor they think he is capable of it and they have a point. Messi runs rings around everyone for fun and he does that against the best defenders. However despite all his skill and goals. I am yet to witness one like that. Come to think of it. I think the Ronaldo goal I am on about was against united and he put Evra to shame, but it wasn't because Evra was shit. He just outclassed the whole of their defence.
