I know I'm a bit late with this but does anyone still do it.
Its where a tall dark man carrying a piece of coal enters your house by the front and leaves by the back at new year.
My grandad used to be first footer in his village as he was tall and dark

With a cracking view |
I was taught by my dad that it was a piece of coal, something to drink, and something to eat.
Tall, dark and handsome stranger was to first foot with these items, and leave them with the house.
The 'first footer' was supposed to bring the house good luck, and the coal, food and drink to make sure the house was never cold, hungry or thirsty ...

My old dad ... god rest him ... used to put money outside the house at the end of the old year and then bring it in at the start of the new year ... I still have some that he 'brought in' to one of my first homes ... very special meaning obviously !!! |
