The hatred of southerners.

Bradford

I watched a program a bit ago about the history of Britian and it talked about The Harrying of The North.

Basically, in 1069/1070, William the Conquerer came up from down south and destroyed most of The north of England.

"

The King stopped at nothing to hunt his enemies. He cut down many people and destroyed homes and land. Nowhere else had he shown such cruelty. This made a real change.

To his shame, William made no effort to control his fury, punishing the innocent with the guilty. He ordered that crops and herds, tools and food be burned to ashes. More than 100,000 people perished of hunger.

I have often praised William in this book, but I can say nothing good about this brutal slaughter. God will punish him.

—Orderic Vitalis, 12th century

"

Do you think this is where the north south "rivalry" comes from?

When I moved up here ... I was called a ' foreigner'

I got told once I had taken a job from a northerner who needed it and I should have stayed in London

What a welcome to Yorkshire I got

I also know that was just a few people - a minority

I don't know where the hatred comes from - I think there is friendly banter more than anything else

No, to be honest I think it's more to do with attitudes. Media bias is extremely infuriating, everything is either better or more severe if it happens down south. In 2010 when the bad snows arrived the north had them 48 hours before London, people went to work, life continued but the snow was exceptionally deep and the worst seen for decades. Yet when it hit London (and not as severe) it was national news, the railways stopped, the country came to a halt.

Very infuriating and biased.

England was divided long before William the Conqueror. So divided that it didn't even exist!

After moving to the UK, here in the True North (pay attenshun, you lot somewhere in the middle like Manchester etc I was appalled when someone gave me what felt like the Third Degree at a bus stop.

And now, two decades later, I find myself doing the same. Friendly folk, here. No sudden silences when you walk into a pub.

I find it annoying that the 'news' centres on what happens in the Deep Sarf. We don't exist - unless somebody starts shooting and causing havoc.

There's some kind of national disdain for the North. No idea why.

Cambridgeshire is a no mans land, my mates in London say I'm northern, mates in Yorkshire say I'm southern and my mates in Wales, well they are just a special breed

I worked in London on and off for many years and I never had a problem with anybody. It's all to do with attitude if you're chilled out and friendly you will make friends anywhere.

If you have a big chip on your shoulder you will attract negative types,it really is that simple. The south in general I can't comment on but it must be the same principles everywhere surely.

Whenever I go down South no bugger can understand a word I say. When I went to Uni in Northampton it took a month for the peeps I was with to get my accent.
