I had a hernia operation when I was14. I have a really bad cough at the moment and had the nmost painful twinge ever where the scar is!! Think it's a trip to the doctors or the emergency doctors for me what would you do in my position? I think they just pushed back it back to its original place instead of taking it out so I now I can't empty my bowels properly or give birth naturally |

Take what out? A hernia is just a hole in the wall of the abdomen where your bowel poked through. They are supposed to just shove it back in. Any area of scar tissue will be weaker so I would get it checked out if it's still bugging you in the morning. Wouldn't say it's an emergency if it's not causing you much pain.
That wasn't half bad on3 quarters of a bottle of disarano |

My mum said that they took something out
Yeah I will get it seen to as its causing pain when I cough but don't know what else they can do seeing as they've already done one op on it. I fear I might get a collapsed lung with this cough, my peak flow is between 100-150 and also have asthma
You did well |

A bit dramatic you know when you have a collapsed lung....don't forget you have muscles and your rib cage round your chest so when you cough it pulls the muscles and your ribs can hurt..I doubt very much your lung will collapse and use your inhaler as directed...if you feel bad in the morning go to the doctor |

Plus you smoke which is not wise to do as you have a cough which then irritates the lungs...try and cut down the fags while coughing...yes I smoke but I know when to put the packet down when feeling like crap... |

Actually (and I dint condone smoking) my sister has a horrendous cough all the time. So much so it gives her incredibly intense headaches and the only thing that gives her any respite is a cigarette.
OP I don't think you have a collapses lung or that your bowels are going to fall out over night so I wouldn't waste hours on end in an emergency department on New years eve surrounded by lissed up idiots. Sounds like you have pulled some muscles while coughing. Take some anti inflamatories and if you still feel bad in the morning give 111 a ring to get some proper medical advice. |

Depends how bad the asthma is.
I was born with it but have it under control now. I know my triggers and I avoid them where possible. I also know how I feel and when I need help, and at that point I ask for it and, if necessary, make a fuss until taken seriously.
OP you know how your breathing feels. We can't advise you. If you can wait until morning, do, but if you're 'mucus-y' remember that mucus plugs can kill. If you think you need help call 111. If it's urgent, call your out of hours GP service or an ambulance. |

Im not even going to reply to this thread..ohh..i already have. One piece of advice tho dont for goodness sake take anything aspirin based as you may end up with an asthma attack which could collapase your lung resulting in your 7 year old scar to open and all your bowels will come out. Nuff said go and speak with professionals. |

Chest pains have stopped but still getting a few pains where the hernia scar is so will have to see how I am tomorrow, ring the doctors and see what they say. I haven't had chance to spend half an hour on the phone to nhs today. Mine gave way when I had a cold and couldn't stop coughing. Was told by the consultant that if I didn't have op I would die, which I nearly did when I was born so I've been pretty lucky tbh |

OP, let me just get this right - you have a cough, coughing is giving you a pain where your 7 year old scar is from a
hernia op which you nearly died from.
As a result of this hernia op, you cannot
empty your bowels properly or give birth naturally. You are worried that your lung has collapsed and you have asthma, which is a result of a
premature birth which you nearly died from.
You cannot get help from NHS Direct a
s the last time you rang, after falling over and knocking yourself unconscious, they kept you on the phone for half an hour.
I could be very wrong so don't take this as gospel but I just think you've got a cough, not unheard of at this time of year. Go to the docs for an accurate assessment though. |

the buses weren't running at the time i posted or today and I don't have any money until saturday so will have to get a lift up there when my nephew has gone, but will ring the doctor before I go and see what she says |

"I had a hernia operation when I was14. I have a really bad cough at the moment and had the nmost painful twinge ever where the scar is!! Think it's a trip to the doctors or the emergency doctors for me what would you do in my position? I think they just pushed back it back to its original place instead of taking it out so I now I can't empty my bowels properly or give birth naturally "
Honestly?
Well personally if I am in that bad a condition I am considering visiting the emergency doctor the last thing I would be doing is logging in here. I would contact a friend, get a taxi or call an ambulance I wouldn't put cost in front of my health and I would have done something proactive within 23 hours and seen a medical professional. If its that bad the NHS has an A&E dept. |

I ain't no doctor but from my 33 years on this earth when I have a really bad cough....every part of my body hurts as you are straining the muscles coughing...I've had occasion where my ribs are battered from coughing....now I was delivered full term and not had a hernia removed....so I can't comment on that but dear god just see a gp...or go to a hospital or look up the symptoms on google or go into a boots walk in centre....good luck |

A very strange thread. A possibly serious condition and lots of reasons why it is impossible to do anything about it. No parent, sibling, neighbour, bloke down the road, work colleague, friend, distant friend, total stranger or friendly genie with 3 wishes to take you anywhere. Nothing from NHS direct.
I'm wondering what the result would have been if it were a single male posting this thread? |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
OP, have you been or are you with your parents or other family? Are they worried about you and advising you to go and seek immediate medical help? As they know your health too I would consider their level of concern.
I don't understand why other GPs don't do what my surgery does and have an emergency slot every day. You do have to convince the reception staff that it is serious but not A&E serious. It seems to work for us.

It does use me that people think you can't do both. Seek medical advice whilst also post on here. "
Personally, medical problems I prefer to ask my gp...but that's just me with my foibles! |

I have to disagree with MissCheeky on a sentence in her last post.
OP please do not look up your symptoms on Google or medical sites, God knows what the list of possible illnesses would be!
I don't wish to be mean OP but its all silly isn't it. Its extremely unlikely to be serious, and you've been well enough to continually post on here.

It hasn't been as bad as last night but I will be ringing up the doctors first thing in the morning. The only people I know who drive are my parents who were a good 30 minute drive away at my grandparents drinking. Luckily I have no pain at the moment which is a good sign I suppose |

Sorry but as a Parent my main priority wouldn't be to go and get pissed but to look after my poorly daughter and to give them the help and support that you obviously need. |

"Depends how bad the asthma is.
If it's urgent, call your out of hours GP service or an ambulance."
My 22 year old daughter is asthmatic and had chest pains and difficulty breathing on Christmas Eve. She called for an ambulance as you do when in need of medical attention: the rapid response arrived in three minutes the ambulance in six.
The ambulance crew asked if they could carry out their tests ie peak flow, ECG etc in the lounge as they couldn't breath in my daughter's room. Her attack was triggered by her environment: windows firmly closed, radiator about 2000 degrees, joss sticks and scented candles burning = no oxygen!
Standing "oh-vay" to the three paramedics who attended! |

The paramedics who attended my house on Christmas Eve were almost thankful for a "genuine" call out. They said people self diagnose using Google, a headache becomes a brain tumour, a fever Ebola, pulled muscle, heart attack!
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing! |

Nail on head there its best left to the professionals to tell you whats going on. It sounds like they got there promptly didn't make a drama and gave good advice but in general they do I guess we are pretty lucky to have the NHS here. |

"I was joking do not use Google
House is much better.
do diagnosis murder "
That is Google isn't it?
House diagnoses people with my condition about half the time - usually when they are nearly dead. At some point he usually orders broad spectrum antibiotics and then needs to fix the problems that has caused. The answer is usually found by a cause lurking around their home. Therefore, the NHS dealing with Miss-Tress's daughters got there quicker than Google or House by checking the environment first.
Hurrah for the NHS.

I have to admit that people who go to the doctors and even more so the A&E Dept over the slightest ailment really annoys me. I have little tolerance for it as people with genuine illnesses have to suffer with long waiting times and not being able to get same day appointments.
Whilst I realise that some ailments could be potentially more serious that people may realise, you can tell the type of people who exaggerate by the way they talk. No doubt we've all worked with people who will have lots of time off work with the way common cold etc.
Pharmacists are a great source of information and they can sell many things over the counter, people should use them more |
