It probably depends on the situation.
For example if someone we were meant to be meeeting got caught up in a combine harvester and suffered horrific injuries, we'd probably accept a last minute cancellation, otherwise - a couple of hours probably would suffice |

Very true... was thinking less of the dire emergencies.. what would be acceptable or is there a correlation between the reason given and the notice period? I mean does a real emergency require less notice?? |

Did not make myself clear... I was referring to the non-urgent non emergency situation, where for example you have arranged a meeting but then realise you have double booked yourself with work or assignments etc..
I am NOT talking about the "changed my mind" "had a better offer" excuses.... |

My point entirely but
1. How do you know when it is a lie? I mean, we had to cancel meetings for non-emergency reasons like an assignment where the research took a bit longer than anticipated.
2. In the Bible of Emergency Excuses this would not and should not feature... would you agree?

Surely, if you really want to meet them and they sound genuinely sorry, sound as if they really want to meet you, and give you a plausible reason for cancelling, then you'd give them the benefit of the doubt. No need to write formulae - just play it by ear. |

1 - well if someone said they had just realised were behind in some DIY (let's say) and they needed to get it done because the carpets were being fitted the following day and they then spent the evening in the chatroom on cam... it's clearly bollox

Never mind...lol.. I was just curious what the common perception was on what
constitutes an acceptable excuse and what time period was acceptable. Clearly it varies from one person to another and I am learning from this thread alone that it requires a degree communication if the relationship between cancellor and cancellee is to be maintained...lol |

I totally agree with you there.. I simply wanted to know whether this was a couple of hours or days... or somewhere in between.

I don’t think you can set a timescale as people can’t tell you before they know themselves. If they knew and yet left it to the last minute then it’s not very respectful to the people they are meeting… neither would it be if they caused the problem knowing the problem would mean cancelling.
Example:
“I have just realised I made a huge boo-boo in a presentation I am giving tomorrow and I have to rewrite all of the slides and handouts, really very sorry but I have to cancel tonight” - I can imagine this being acceptable at quite short notice.
“I am really sorry I have to cancel tonight as I have a presentation to finish ready for tomorrow. I really thought I’d get it finished at work today but I was called into a meeting and all my plans went tits up.” - I can imagine this being acceptable at quite short notice.
“I’m sorry I have to cancel tonight. After I arranged to meet you I got an offer to meet someone else on Monday, I then got a booty call on Tuesday and a mate asked me out for a drink yesterday, so I haven’t had time to write a presentation I need for work” – I wouldn’t find this acceptable – even if it is just bad time management.
