So what would you do??

Another post got me thinking about something that happened to me a few years back and how the public react. Now as a member of the public what would you do in this situation:

A large queue at a popular clothes store just before Christmas, you are next up to be served, standing patiently holding your 3 year old daughters hand. A woman comes from nowhere and pushes in front of you shouting 'I'm next. All you soft f@*$/@# can wait." You politely tell her where the back of the queue is and she turns round and head butts you.

What would you do if you saw this happen? Intervene or turn away?

I will post what the outcome was later. Hindsight is great but go with your gut feeling.

I would hope other people would intervene, and the store security would come.

However, I get the impression nothing like this happened

Hope you recovered ok from it

If I saw someone assault someone else like that I would help restrain them until the police were called. What a psycho!

I'd have her arrested and charged with assault, there would be plenty of witnesses.

I and I'd expect others around me would intervene until the store security or police arrive.

I take it everyone in the queue just reacted blindly to it?

If I was close enough to do so I hope I would do this too.

Well Mrs Naughty would have head butted her and I would of pulled her lower half down and spanked her red raw whilst shouting for someone to assist you and daughter of course x

I've just finished reading Trainspotting and it's sequel Porno.

The behaviour described reminds me of Begbie, playing by Robert Carlye in the film of Trainspotting and going to appear in the film of Porno when it's released in a few years.

As someone above mentioned - PSYCHO!!

I'd be grateful it was a clothes store, had it been a burger bar you'd have got little or no help, nor sympathy.

doesnt the law state that if you act violently back within 3 seconds its a natural reaction and self defence.. any longer and its a pre meditated attack.

shamefully gotta be honest if i was headbutted ouuta the blue id probs lamp them one back.. and worry that there was an audience or my child there with me afterwards

I'd ask the staff to call security/ the police. I wouldn't let her get away with it. I doubt anyone in the queue would help though unfortunately.

If your safety was not in immediate danger. I would offer first aid and leave it to the police as it should be .

If she was still there mouthing off I would approach her , ask her to calm down and leave the area so I can administer first aid take two steps back and if she came towards me , a push to the solar plexus if she came back again, would have to be roundhouse to thighs .

More sure you call an ambulance and administer first aid

When the police arrive say " after I saw the woman assault the other person, I asked her to move away so I could administer first aid , I took two steps, so as to be out of her personal space, she stepped toward me , at this time bearing in mind I have already seen this woman assault another person, I felt in immediate fear for my personal safety and pushed her hard in the solar plexus , with the base of my hand , this was not sufficient so I had no choice but to administer pain distraction techniques to her thigh . I offered first aid

I bet you can't guess how rough the pub I used to own was

Well folks this us how it ended:

I saw the headbutt coming and lowered my own head so she headbutted my skull. Her nose exploded and it hurt her alot more than it hurt me.

NOBODY intervened. There were about 15 people in the queue behind me; made up of men, women , old and young. Alot of ooooing and ahhing but nobody phoned the police or tried to stop her (that included staff on the counter).

I calmly told her to smile for the camera whilst I took a picture of her. She promptly legged it and I called the police and had to tell the shop staff to get security. Police came. Took statement but she was never caught. Thankfully my daughter doesnt remember it and luckily I didnt pass out.

Would I do the same again? Without a shadow of a doubt. It's who I am. If something isn't right I have to speak up.

If I was a member of the public in that situation I would have to do something, be it ring the police or even physically intervene. I could not watch a woman with child be assaulted but others that day did.

It's obvious the other people in the queue were the sort of coward that hits women , children or hits people who take their seats .

That's the thing with cowards all to keen to punch out to prove themselves , but too scared to help someone else

My past experience is the police would not investigate this sort of thing all they were doing was taking statements to cover their arses if the other woman made a claim that you assaulted her or you used too much force in protecting yourself .

And yes they would arrest you and charge you if you used too much force even though she started it

I would intervene. Whether that intervention was to restrain, to protect or to try and clam the situation down would depend on how the situation evolved.

Though if someone had pushed in like that I would almost certainly have let it go in order to hopefully stop it escalating

Id have to step in,and someone who could do that in the first place let alone infront of a child would deserve anything the police threw at her.

thats ok but what happens if it tajes you more than 3 seconds to get her and hit err I mean apprehend her.

Myfirst priority would be the person who got head butted, then go after the nutter.

If it was someone else in the queue id drag her out of the store by her hair and throw her out on the street. If it were me it happened to probably nothing. I will stand up for others, but not usually myself.

Id do something if I was with my daughter providing her safety wasn't compromised - I can't stand by and watch things

Saying that even if she was with me Id still call the police , call security .. or take a picture

Never fails to amaze me how many people stand by and watch .

I'd get my phone out, select camera, swipe across to video, press the record button, give comentary "oooooooh shiiiiiiiiiiiite", go home, have a tea, turn on laptop, start up Firefox, google world star hip hop, create an account, upload video, sit back and watch the hits stack up, become an internet millionaire.

Somewhere in North Norfolk

I like to think I would have intervened. It's impossible to know how you'll react in any situation until you're actually there though. Sometimes the shock of the situation changes things and prevents people acting. That nobody acted, however, is outrageous.

I'm very surprised that none of the staff acted, even to call security, because they could be held accountable for that.

It's impossible to say how I would react, I have often stood up for others but probably just as often been too shocked or stunned to react
