A hard lesson, but in computerland, if something is not stored in 2 different physical locations, it doesn't exist.
I've used Windows Briefcase and OSX Time Machine for years and they've served me well.
Both slightly different (obviously), but in essence, they both only backup changed and new files. I can backup up all 4 of my systems in a couple of minutes or less, depending on how much is new/changed. |

feel your pain, my last laptop went bang then smoked for a bit and the hard drive wasnt salvageable 
x
