Windows Maintenance Cold Call

I've just had gent on the phone from what sounded like an Indian call centre. He said he was from the "maintenance company for Windows" and asked me if I could spare a few minutes for a very important check-up on my computer. I told him I didn't respond to cold calls and hung up. I didn't fancy revealing a load of my computer info to someone I'd never heard of, and had not previously contacted myself.

Has anyone else had a similar call?

Tim

You should have told him you were running a Mac - see what his reaction was.

Never had that one .... yet,

But if I did, I'd be responding with that very famous Russian word that ends in 'off'

Definately sounds a bit suspect

Microsoft never contact you by phone un solicited.

It's a new scam trying to get you to purchase supposed clean up and remote anti spyware checks. They ask you go to a few folders and look for certain files. of course those files are actually there. They then tell you your infected and will remove the infection for x quid

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

I had one from "my bank" which I nearly went along with. I stopped when he asked me to type in a password number which he supplied to which I said I don`t passwords and put the phone down. He phoned me staight back but got a good old Anglo Saxon brush off!
