This has always been my dream car. If BL hadn't fucked up the engine development it would have pissed all over the Mercedes SL.. Anyway they are reliable now and are still the best looking car ever made. That Triumph V8 has such a sound... So, the Stag is my choice, what is yours folks? |

"The SD1 looked nice but was thrown together. The best Rover was the P6."

A local guy had a Stag that he left to rot - he should have been strung up!
So, either a Stag, and E Type Jag or an Mercedes SLK 1970.
Please.
I will beg. |

"Alfa Romeo 8C, the best sounding V8 ever made.
For an every day car I quite fancy either and Alfa Brera or GT, both with the 3.2 Ferrari derived V6."
If it was a classic I'd go for an early 70's Alfa GTV 2000. One of the prettiest coupes ever made. |

I believe a good conversion was to use the Rover V8 engine in the Stag. I think the Stag had cylinder head problems, if my memory serves me correctly. |

In Australia they had a reputation for overheating. Mine had its engine replaced with a Leyland P76 4.2 litre V8, which was too big for the engine bay and had to have the pipes that come out of the sides of the block (yeah I don't know what they are called) cut down so it would fit. I loved that car. |

sort of correct as the cylinder head gasket went due to the poor design of the radiator.somebody now makes a radiator for the stag with a much bigger core to prevent clogging |

The whole cooling system was poor on the stag water pump was too high and wouldn't circulate coolant if the level dropped too far.
As for the engine itself the original spec was the V8 that was fitted to the rover but jaguar objected because they didn't want to compete against the stag for sales.

Yes, that just about sums up the old nationalised British Leyland, which included Jaguar/Rover/Triumph. Along with the bolshie unions the management really didn't have a clue. Many were just political placemen with no idea about selling cars.
A great engine for the Stag would have been the smaller 250 V8 fitted into the Daimler. It would have had a little less power, but still enough, but it was reliable and could have really made the Stag a world beater. |

Ahhh the P1800 is lovely - tried one out for a while - Mother didn't like how low to the ground you are in it though, so it went back.
Stuck with Volvos [had 17!] and the best of them were the 122S models!
