What's everyone reading at the moment?

I'm reading Whatever happen to Tanganyika? A book about place names that no longer exist but would probably have been familiar to your granddad.

David Gemmell writes good fantasy, but it is aimed at teenagers, really in my view and his later books are very patchy, but you could do worse. Robert Rankin is well worth a look, but his surreal sense of humour isn't everyone's cup of tea

If you like Game of Thrones I'd give Joe Abercrombie's books a go, starting with 'The Blade Itself'. It's a similar kind of thing - gritty fantasy with lots of violence, war and games for power. Not as much sex though!

At the moment I am reading My James by Ralph Bulger. I dont know why I picked up this rather harrowing and explicit account of the murder of James Bulger at christmas time, but whilst emotional and dark, it is a compelling read.

Expect to cry a lot if you decide to read it and after this I will definitely read something lighthearted

I still buy books. I pay more than that for a hardback and between £6-9 for paperbacks. I accept that they are not incurring the printing costs with e-books but I wonder if the smaller numbers of print copies now means a higher cost per print?

The Town by The Cross

It's less personal , revealing and self indulgent to show someone your fanny than it is to list what you are reading.

So ..... here's my fanny (@)

Mother Tongue - Bill Bryson

Just finished At Home also by Bill Bryson (brilliantly funny author) and The Vermilion Gate by a Chinese author..I think her name was Aiping Mu...If interested in modern Chinese history, this and Wild Swans (Jung Chang) are real sad but true eye openers.

have to say that was the most disturbing book I've ever read, think I cried all the way through it "

I've got his other two to read yet. The last ones meant to be heart breaking as it shows how badly damaged he is, it shows how he couldn't bond with his own child due to his fears he'd turn into his parents and abuse the child.

"The Woman Who Went to Bed For a Year by Sue Townsend.

Its about a woman who has a breakdown when her husband has an affair and goes to bed, and never gets up again. Ends up sectioned.

Very funny, sweet and sad. "

I have also read that, couldn't put it down

I read that series as it came out, and paid a lot of money for a proof reader copy of the 9th part to get it 6 months before it was published. I had to know how it all finished, and wasn't disappointed.

Enjoy it!

I'm reading Shake Hands with the Devil about the Rwandan genocide. Really heavy going but brilliantly written. I have been reading it for an age because it's the kind of thing I can only read bits at a time and put it away for awhile in a dark corner in the cupboard.
