Although this dates back 20 odd years when first mentioned but some scientists actually believe the universe is a hologram.

Not sure what it means but fascinating stuff anyway.

We could be all just a sim game

the basic idea is 'bits' of information..perhaps when we have quantum computers up and running it might give us the answer(or more bloody questions).A piece of light( a photon) has been teleported already

matter exists in all manners of ways, and I suppose to its extent it is constantly recycled

probably a bit chicken and egg, but the start of the universe was probably anothers end and that continues- perhaps the 'program'-just reboots with random variables

when all the stars and galaxies die, black holes suck up everything..the combined energy re-explodes

a personal theory of mine, is the conscious observers of the universe(s), are needed to keep it alive. The anthropic principle is my key to this, however it cant be based on human observation as the universe was here billions of years before us...so there must be some other conscious observers out there.Imagine how many realities one person can think(or dream of), science fiction has become science fact...and eventually we will have AI(sentient AI) and will be be integrated into it(unless they wipe us out 1st lol), what other way will we make it when the universe becomes incredibly hostile.

"Science is a human construct. In the wider universe it's probably meaningless."

That is a very thought provoking statement, and there could be a lot of truth in it.

As for the rest, I've always struggled to get my head around it all.

They say that the universe is around 14 billion years old, and they tell us that we can see to what they call the edge of the universe at around 13.5 billion light years away. The distant galaxies that they can see are made up mostly of stars which have on average a lifespan of around 8 billion years. So based on those numbers the so called "edge of the universe" isn't there any more. So maybe it is all a hologram.

I love the idea that science may be utter bullshit. Obviously science works by way of us making sense of things among ourselves etc. but the idea that we may yet discover something that would fundamentally change how we understand everything is very exciting.

And a bit of a mind fuck..

A young waitress Polly Matzinger approached two geneticists(I think they were), asked a simple question,"why is there no animal that mimics skunks", I dunno how the story goes...but shes now is one of the worlds experts in immunology"

my point is simple things can lead to new discoveries and even debunk established scientific 'fact' or theories

You had me at mimicking skunks.

I think with science we maybe shape the universe to suit us. But if the principles on which modern science is based are completely wrong we could be ignorant to all sorts of things all around us.

Why for example does a nipple suck feel so good?

We observe the universe as best we can and draw theories from the information we have at the time. scientific theories are regularly turned on their heads or dismissed, we know its all an approximation but useful things come from it.

watched brian cox on starwatch about a year ago and he told dara obrian he thought theres no chance theres no life (like us)other than us in the universe, then in his lectures recently shown he went to a lot of trouble explaining why life such as ours is a probability. either he has got a short memory or very confused lol

he probably meant the idea of sentient life is small, mainly given the fact even space faring races would have to deal with problems such as high speed travel, living without gravity etc.. there may be tonnes of life around us...but very basic

Lolz - they're all working on just theory & even the origins of our own planet are 'just theory'. The truth is that we know almost nothing!

Another theory is that for every grain of sand on ever beach on our planet, there's a star & solar system (or was it a universe?); therefore, the chances that we're 'alone' would have to be squillions upon squillions to one!!

.........I think it's sssssoooooooooo much easier & less complicated to just believe in God!!

Almost all science is based on the consensus of the majority of scientists on a theory put forward by one or more scientist for peer review and that theory not fully the correct or definitive answer most likely will not be the consensus at a later date so what we can say with almost certainty is there is very little proof and only theory..

"probably a bit chicken and egg, but the start of the universe was probably anothers end and that continues- perhaps the 'program'-just reboots with random variables"

What have chickens and eggs to do with anything?

And the egg came 100's of millions of years before the chicken...

Just to be clear, at some point in time fish started to produce eggs, fish came long before amphibians that led to reptiles (all of whom produce eggs) from which came mammals and birds...

Please if you are going to reduce the most fundamental questions about where we come from to schoolyard conundrums pick one that is not so easy to debunk.

The odds of life being the same as us is very small.

The odds of there being no other life is also small.

So life is very likely to exist but not be like us.

Good line

Funny that on the one hand we can accept that science can be flawed and change but on the other still accept it as absolute fact. We can't possibly know how humans actually evolved - they're still discovering new relatives and can't agree from what we're descended yet.

Yeah...its not a new theory...when it "re-explodes", and our earth is born again, life on earth will have completed the next evolutional step...

Hopefully, this time it will include maximum human brain usage and comprehension!
