According to the news this morning the sign language man claims that he had some kind of seizure and couldn't control himself ! But like me after 10 pints  |

Although it must have been a dreadful ordeal for the signer,,,
I like to think Nelson would've seen the funny side of it....

Not speaking any of the South African languages or dialects I had no way to tell for sure but I certainly thought at the time he was making it up as he went along |

I just saw a clip of him next to Obama. Reminded me of that game they play on Mock the Week where they show a news clip but do a voiceover which has nothing to do with what is actually happening. |

We were talking about it last night and saying even when someone said the same thing again he had a different sign for it. And of course sign language is not one language so he could have been translating into different languages.

What I meant was that deaf associations who know South African dialects and languages did not recognise a single bit of his signage - furthermore, it did not look anything like American sign language either.
If it was some kind of sign language it was known only to him which makes him being there rather pointless. |

Different languages. American/Canadian English is different to British Sign Language for instance. |

I know that American sign language is generally done with one hand, whereas British sign language it is both hands. There may be some signs in common for common ideas or objects, but sometimes the signer has to spell out a word, which would mean it would be spelled out in the language being signed. If that makes any sense? |

I did giggle when I heard the story in the news, just seen the vid, and think he definatly looked lost part way thro and just seemed to be doing repeating signs x  |

He was signing the same words in completely different ways. So he was obviously just making it up. Also there's no facial expression which you usually have when people sign. That's all part of the communication but his face does not change and, apart from his hands, his body doesn't move.
My cousin used to do signing for television years ago - it was most definitely not like that. |

I did a basic BSL course years ago to help with work. It's really hard to get the right facial signs and concentrate on your hands. I kept getting told off for smiling at the wrong bits.

But this man is supposed to be a professional signer performing in front of the world at a very very important gathering for a world famous deceased leader. It was at worst amateurish - at best an insult.

This has been tickling me for days.
He distracted me when Obama was speaking. I said to my sister all that's missing is the flags it looks like he's sending semaphores!
Lo and behold I wasn't far off. He was hearing voices...allegedly!  |
