This afternoon my elderly dog was put to sleep leaving my two younger dogs very bewildered and myself devastated. Its just the hardest part of owning a pet.Ive also just found out that a woman not too far from me has been charged with allowing her german shepherd and lurcher dogs to starve to death.Frankly I'd love to see her put down!! |

He was 18 years old so its a big gap in our lives. The vet came to my house to help him get to sleep which was so much nicer than going to the surgery. |

It's ever so sad when pets die, but the joy they bring to us throughout their lives outweighs the sadness of their deaths. Your boy was 18 and must have been a very happy chap with you as a friend - he travelled the journey and reached the end safe and sound, you can't ask any more than that.
When you feel you're up to it, maybe adopt an older dog? There are many that need a family like yours. |

Im sorry for your loss and just before christmas too. Our little dog was 16 when she died i got another soon after because i couldnt stop crying, couldnt sleep and was in a terible state.
i dont know how people can mistreat their pets.
The vet said when my son and hubby took our dog to be put down, they are part of the family and its true they are.
I felt like i had lost a child.
I make a fuss of my little dog because i know how much i miss them when they have gone. |

That's so sad, I'm sorry to hear that. Its great he lived that long but in a way it must make it harder.
When I was growing up we had this amazing lab cross red setter who was the daftest, friendliest dog ever. My brother got him just before I was born and he died just before my 18th birthday! When they are part of your family for so long its a huge loss.
Just think about the wonderful life you gave him - I'm sure he was one of the lucky ones! |

Sorry for your loss, pets are part of the family. Our dog was also 18 when we had to have him put down. Sadly our other one who was younger and healthy collapsed in front of my young niece and nephew. He had a heart attack. You have given your dog the greatest gift as he is now free from pain. As for that woman words cant describe her. X |

I am very sorry to hear this and I know what you're going through as I've recently gone through the same.
My 13 year old spaniel died in October, she had cancer. I am still upset over it and I really miss her. The house is so empty.
Take care and I hope things feel easier in time. At least you gave him a comfortable life with lots of love x |

I'm so sorry we have two dogs one is five, the same age as my lad, they've grown up together, now she'll hopefully reach 15 plus...
The thought has crossed my mind so many times... I'm dreading it.. But more so for my lad. |

When one was my beloved cats was run over and killed earlier this year, I posted in the lounge and a lovely forumite replied with this poem, I've got tears running down my cheeks after reading it again while copying it for you...I hope it helps
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... |

You have my sympathies. It's awful losing a friend and even worse when you have to make the decision. But, you wouldn't want him to live in pain and misery so you did the loving, kind thing. The hard thing.
