My notebook has stopped working when I put the charger in it doesn't light up where the charger goes anymore but if I take battery out it lights up for about 10 seconds was wondering if it's the charger or the battery I know this is probably not the right thing to put on this site but some advice would be much appreciated

If you know someone with the same notebook, you could try swapping the parts - one at a time - and see if that helps.

Mine was the same, I am guessing if I didn't buy one when I did it would have gone kapputt altogether.

Here and there

If you take the battery out and plug the charger in does the computer still turn on? It should. If it doesn't then it could be a problem with the charger or it could be something altogether more serious.

(When plugging in a laptop without the battery in place be careful not to touch any of the pins that connect the battery!)

Ok, best case scenario the charger is knackered and hasn't been charging the battery properly so that's why that's knackered too. I would start by trying to find someone with a charger that definitely works and try it with that. Laptop/notebook chargers are largely interchangeable so it doesn't necessarily have to be for the same make or model as yours.

the reason I don't think it's the charger is cause the light goes on where the charger touches notebook for ten seconds when the battery isn't in

I would change the charger first if I was you cos if the changer is broke it's not charging the battery so the battery won't have power to work lol

Well if you're sure that there is power getting to it and it's still not turning on then you've got bigger problems than the battery. Does it do absolutely nothing when you press the on button? The fan doesn't even start up?

It could be any number of things then, from a broken connection to a completely knackered bios. Looks like you're buying a new laptop.

Sounds like the battery has been failing for sometime, hence the battery warning, then chances are battery has shorted out internally, which has then damaged the charger !

If your notebook is more that 3 years old or so i would spend the money towards a new laptop/notebook, battery and charger probably at least £100 for the pair... is it worth it, the hard disc could always be salvaged if need be to get special photos and info removed later, so don't just throw the old one away !

Was the wall socket switched on when you plugged the charger in?

Sounds to me like a faulty connection on the charge port, the daughter board for HP's charging port are notorious for blowing !

That aside it could of overheated perhaps ? You can do what is called a hard reset, remove battery and poer cable , hold down power button for 30 secs ( discharges all power from the laptop )

Then replace battery and power cable and try it ??

Saying all that you have probably smashed it up now anyway lol !!!
