May sound like a stupid question here, but is there such a thing as a job where someone works out everything that is wrong with a building and then gives that person a list then on what needs doing so they can do it all in one go? Is that what a Labourer does or is that something else?

It sounds exactly what I need, someone to go into my empty house. list the jobs, quote a price and get on with it, would make life so much easier, and planning the payments, as work progresses.

Exactly. I would love to say there's the wallpaper/paste/paint, etc. now decorate those rooms. Those shelves need fixing as well, can you sort out that bit of damp and empty the gutters. Fix those units and all in different parts of the house too. He'll say that's "£1000, we'll take cash/card/cheque and it will take 10 hours of non stop work to do it in". Then go out for the day, come back and when he's almost done. Say I got the money ready when you're finished. When he's done then look at all the jobs and if happy. Give him the money. Not phone around for different people to come at different times to do jobs and then realise I or they have missed something.

West Yorkshire

Problem is you may well need people with different skill sets. A plasterer, an electrician, a decorator, a carpenter.

Central

Im not sure there is a job that does this, unless it is a builder, who would sub contract, and organise it all. I do like the idea of a handyman though, who would do odd bits of stuff and keep life nice and smooth and be a PA too.

Somewhere in North Norfolk

Jack of all trades

(Master of none)

Fine if you want all the jobs done to an ok-ish standard, I'd guess.

I would rather have a mature, thourgh handyman, than a young specialist, just out for the cash.

Yellow pages is full of companies specialising in plumbing, gas, decorating, the companies may be experts but the staff very often have limited experience and skills.

That's true, but I would prefer not to choose them either!

If I wanted something doing I'd prefer to employ somebody who would do it well. If I wanted ok-ish, I'd do it myself!

What I am saying is. Isn't there a business where someone could come out give an estimate for all jobs and then they will send out their employees who specialise in different areas. So you may get 5 workers working at once, etc?'

There are certainly multi trade contractors in Glasgow. I dunno if the guys are all employees but one guy comes out to quote for all the works and next thing it gets done.

Maybe not the absolute cheapest way but certainly the simplest.

So basically they are called "multi trade contractors". I'll remember that. Obviously it will be expensive as you are asking for several workers to work a whole day straight. Although the power of the Internet does wonders these days for finding bargains. I am aware though you have to be aware for cowboys, etc.
