"Last night we had the second burglary in less than a week on our street. Sat in my house with all the doors and windows locked listening to the wind howl and feeling very uneasy. Xx"
This time of the year brings out the scrouts in life . Now some simple tips for you , been xmas shopping dont be carrying out presents from the car just leave them in the boot till its dark . Speak to you neighbours and form a little watch group, if you plan to spend the nite away just let them know . dont leave stuff on show like on the frontroom table .these scroats look for easy in and outs so lock your doors but never leave the keys in them or on show .. the odd placed rubbish bin against the fence is a ideal leg over so move it . and if you see something not quite right make a note of it ie some one not local knocking doors or the strange car . Also the latest scam is the charity collector he says he knocked next door and asks you if there in , you say no and the fuckers turn the house over . |

We were burgled a few months ago, they left our back door open and I was terrified our cats had escaped. We didn't sleep well at all until we left that place. What I do now to keep myself at ease is leaving the living room light on when I head out in the evenings for work, leaving the radio on, going to bed with the radio on helps too. I think you just need to be aware of your security, which it sounds like your doing. And you'll soon fall back into the groove of things once it becomes old news. xx *hugs* |

I woke up to find 3 blokes in my house at 1 in the morning, now I am a big bloke but it still gave me the shock of my life, ended up chasing them out but initially very scary  |

When my neighbour got moved out due to a fire, he had two attempted burglaries on his garage. I ended up going out in my slippers and dressing gown and telling people to sod off. Definitely gets your pulse going.  |

Wandsworth Council is warning homeowners of a new burglary scam, where gang members trawl the area to find vulnerable properties. If they decide your home is a good target for burglary, they will leave a subtle marker on the property to alert other members of the gang.
So what has been going on, and how can you protect yourself?
The scam
The gangs have made '24 hour locksmith' stickers, which are see-through except for text which appears to be advertising a locksmith service - with a fake phone number. They have been placing them on doors of properties in Wandsworth
The council has warned people to be on the look out for these stickers. They may look like innocent marketing, but the police have warned householders that if they have a sticker on their home, it means the gang has decided your property is an ideal burglary target.
They say there has already been one burglary linked to the stickers, and they have a number of leads.
People in the area have been warned that if they find a sticker on their property, they should remove it immediately. The council's crime prevention spokesman Councillor Jonathan Cook said: "There is growing evidence that some organised teams of burglars may be using this method to target homes in south London. We are therefore urging local residents to keep a very close eye out for these stickers and if they find one to remove it straight away."
It's also essential to consider why your property may have been targeted. Do you have sufficient security lighting? Do you have lights on timers to come on when you are out? Do you have sensible locks on your doors and windows? And should you consider installing an alarm?
Are you at risk?
At the moment the stickers have only been spotted in South London, but this is a new incarnation of an old criminal approach.
Elsewhere gangs may leave a chalk mark on the pavement or on the garden wall. In September Greater Manchester police warned that there had been a rise in marking of property, which was being nicknamed the Da Pinci Code. A cross on the outside of the property was thought to mean a good target, a flower symbol indicated wealth, and a book showed the homeowner was a vulnerable woman.
It's a useful reminder to householders everywhere to keep an eye on small changes made to the exterior of their property.
Even if your property is not marked out as a target, it doesn't mean you're completely safe. Inspector David Bannister from Wandsworth police said: "At this time of year with the darker evenings there is traditionally a rise in burglaries, particularly between 3pm and 7pm." So if your home is unoccupied at this time it's worth considering whether you have taken sufficient precautions to keep unwanted intruders out.

I used to have a beautiful german shepherd dog.She was very protective of me and mine!However, I was told by the boys in blue that I had to have signs in my front and back windows stating that I had a guard dog on duty as if I didn't and a little 'scumbag' broke in and got bitten,I would be the one in trouble!  |

We have a huge dog bowl outside, as well as dog stickers. Dogs may visit us, but we have no dog. Also, we light a few bedrooms on timers, as it becomes more offputting if there could be a selection of people about. Always take keys out of doors, as someone mentioned. Preferably left far from any doors too. |

Also perhaps worth mentioning - check your home is properly insured. Working for an insurance broker ive dealt with 5 burglary claims since 1st December. In two cases the victims had either been mistaken about their home security or just plain fibbed about it (saying they had certain locks and super duper alarms which they didnt have) and one victim who had insured the minimum amount he could but had 4.5 times that amount stolen. Not a nice conversation to have two weeks before Xmas! |

you want to borrow my dog, he's as soft as shite but the noisiest god damn dog you have ever heard, the wind blowing is enough to set him off, anyone trying to get in hearing him barking and head butting the door would think twice I do cheap rental fee's |

Crikey. It is the run up to Christmas though, and there's lots of expensive items under trees in people's homes. There's always a spike in burglaries at this time of year due to these factors.
Anyone tries getting into our home and Andy will be taking them on a little trip out to the moors lol.
A high percentage of burglaries are opportunistic. So make sure everything is secure when you go out, even if it's only for a short while. |

Thanks for all the support and advice. I have a dog so I'm hoping that will put people off. He's a Jack Russell but had the voice of a rottweiler! ! Security light still not working so I'm going for a new one tonight on the way home from work. Didn't sleep brilliant last night but the wind is up a and I kept hearing wheelie bins falling over etc!! Xx |

I know this is going to sound harsh but make your house less appealing to burgulars than your neighbours, they are scrotes and want an easy ride, don't give it to them |

also down here in kent the council has decided to give out more smaller rubbish bins.once emptied and your out its a notable sign the house is empty with the bins left outside,how thoughful of the council.but as others have said a light and ,or a radio left on is a good deterrent. |
