The continuing expansion of mining Australia’s valuable mineral resources is only going to make it harder for the indigenous population to hold onto their heritage.... |

"Utopia, a new, epic film on Australia by John Pilger, will be shown on ITV on Thursday 19 December.
"
Cheers for the heads up, I'll do my best not to miss it. I like Pilger's work. Great dissenters such as he and Chomsky are few and far between. |

Pilger was one of the few who told the truth about Vietnam and Cambodia. |

"Not the only country that treated its indigenous population like shit. Look at South Africa and New Zealand.
New Zealand? Any facts to back that one up? "
This from Wiki:
The first Europeans known to have reached New Zealand were Dutch explorer Abel Tasman and his crew in 1642. In a hostile encounter, four crew members were killed and at least one Maori was hit by canister shot. Europeans did not revisit New Zealand until 1769 when British explorer James Cook mapped almost the entire coastline. Following Cook, New Zealand was visited by numerous European and North American whaling, sealing and trading ships. They traded food, metal tools, weapons and other goods for timber, food, artifacts and water. The introduction of the potato and the musket transformed Maori agriculture and warfare. Potatoes provided a reliable food surplus, which enabled longer and more sustained military campaigns. The resulting inter-tribal Musket Wars encompassed over 600 battles between 1801 and 1840, killing 30,000–40,000 Maori. From the early 19th century, Christian missionaries began to settle New Zealand, eventually converting most of the Maori population. The Maori population declined to around 40 percent of its pre-contact level during the 19th century; introduced diseases were the major factor.
To add to this, I've spoken to a few New Zealanders who absolutely hate the Maoris, some going as far as saying that it is them who are "trying to take over the country". Erm, wasn't it theirs in the firt place, when Polynesians settled in the country during the 1200s? |
