My first pair of glasses at 28

Went to get my gammy eye looked at yesterday and ended up getting an eye test as was way overdue. Last time I was tested I was told I had a slight issue but wasn't prescribed glasses.
However I am now slightly short sighted (had never noticed until I had the correct lenses put on) I pick them up Friday but interested to know....
Do I have to wear them for short periods to get used to them?
Should I expect headaches etc at first?
And as it has taken 28 years to be diagnosed as short sighted, am I going to get worse?

The more you wear them, the quicker you adapt. If you have gone for better quality lenses (aspheric or bispheric rather than standard cheap plastic) with an MAR/anti reflective coating, that will help adaptation. If you wear them loads for at least a couple of weeks and continue to get headaches, go back.
And like it or not, everyone will need glasses at some point!

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
I started wearing mine earlier this year and, apart from having to push them up my nose all the blimmin time, I got used to them quite quickly. They do steam up when I go indoors after being in the cold too.
Your optician should have told you how often you need to wear them. And I've noticed my eyesight being worse when I take them off, but I suspect that was because I never noticed how bad it was until I got glasses and could see! |

I had an eye test in June. I'd just turned 40 and the optician told me beforehand I'd probably need reading glasses.
He was surprised when my vision tested near perfect and said it should be several years, at least, before I need reading glasses.
It's nice to know some parts of me work properly because most of me seems to have started falling apart! |

I should think you would only need them for short periods anyway? Watching TV, etc. That's certainly all I used them for when I first got glasses. My eyesight soon deteriorated after that though, and am now pretty bloody short-sighted!
To be fair, that was between the ages of about 16-19 which I think is when it happens for a lot of people. I wouldn't worry too much if it's held off until you're in your 20s.
Although, saying that, don't come crying to me when you require a special braille edition of Fab in a year's time. |

I've worn glasses for near enough 30 years now and wear contact lenses frequently aswell. You will get used to them. You may get the odd headache whilst your eyes adjust but if they continue id go back to the optician |

I've wore glasses all my life and i'm supposed to wear them all the time but I don't as even after all these years they still makes my eyes hurt and make me feel tired, if I wear them for a long time I get a headache and my eyes get heavy, if I don't wear them my eyes start to hurt, can't bloody win |

Totally agree.
If the lenses are prescribed and fitted correctly then you shouldnt suffer from headaches. This tends to be when there is either distortion or the optical centre of the lens is not correct in relation to your pupils.

I was prescribed glasses in my early twenties for astigmatism and slight short sightedness. They took a little while to get used to but didn't give me headaches. I was told that I'd only have to wear them for a couple of years and the astigmatism would be corrected but that turned out not to be the case.
They didn't bother me much to wear, I only really wore them for work because of the old computer screens being green writing on a black background at the time, which I think was proven to be bad for eyes.
After I left the job I stopped wearing them until a few years ago when I decided to get a new prescription. I've never been able to adjust to the new glasses. They bug me because I can never get past the feeling of having something in front of my eyes.

Only started wearing glasses when I began driving lessons. Wondered why I had to sit closer and closer to front in school before that
Would love to see what you look like wearing your glasses as a well selected pair (in my opinion) can make a lady look sooooo sexy.

Thanks girls & guys, I just never thought about how I'd feel when first wearing them. I've been advised I don't need them for reading but a good idea to wear them while using a computer, watching TV etc but they would make things easier while shopping etc.
I can't believe I never noticed I was short sighted, the only thing that really gave me a clue was while watching TV the text on sky tv guide was blurred. I did google it, apparently eyes can change a lot until you're late 20s. |

Oh I've had that, had 2 pairs made up and one was great the other was 1/2 mm out and it was like being severely d*unk the world was completely of kilter, it was so minute a distortion that the optician couldn't detect it but my eyes did, took 3 visits to get it right!
I've worn glasses for shortsightedness and a double astigmatism since I was 13 and can't see more than 6" without them, I find it's frames more than lenses that give me the headache if they don't quite fit perfect!
At least u can get some nice sexy frames these days! Xx |

I was told years ago I had an astigmatism but wasn't given glasses so maybe that's why I have a problem now.
Most of my family need glasses, should have twigged I'd need some eventually my prescription is only a very small one at the moment but while on the lense screen thing in the opticians I really noticed the difference in how clear the middle and bottom set of letters on the screen were compared to without it. |

Last time i had an eye test must have been 10 years ago
They gave me glasses because i had quite bad migraines back then and that my eyes stressed too much when trying to focus on something.
So, i need to wear mine if i am reading/writing/on the laptop or watching tv. To me, it sounded like bullshit and i never really wore it. Now, they keep giving me letters to get it checked again...
........oh crap!

"I'm off to see about getting contacts this weekend after years of wearing glasses. Bit nervous.
Oooh, not sure I could manage contacts x"
I used coloured ones for a while. That requires (at least when I had them it required) the same eye tests, checks and prescriptions as someone who wears them for sight correction.
I found them a lot easier than I expected and very comfortable. Unless there was a problem, (e.g. I'd put them in inside out, and yes, that's possible), or my eyes were very tired or had smoke in them or something, I wasn't aware I was wearing them. |

I've worn contact lenses for years, I used to have monthly ones which you clean after every use but did my head in so switched to daily disposable. Some people struggle with inserting the lense but you just have to remain calm and keep trying. Good luck |

Unless you've got a massive prescription, the induced prism from an incorrect occular centre is minimal and standards allow the centre to be 2mm out.
But glad its sorted.

I had to start wearing glasses a year ago for driving and watching tv, I love my glasses though
Just wanted to say it's important to get your eyes checked, since September I've been having tests and seeing specialists all because I had an eye test and they found some 'marks' on my eyes. Opticians can spot brain tumours and all sorts just from looking at your eyes x |
