A group of us consultants used to meet at a private club for a lunch at Christmas until half of them moved out of London. Now if they are in London they are working and it's too expensive to come in for an equally expensive lunch.

Strictly speaking they should include you in things, all consultations and work events available to all of their staff. Not very good practice.
