Is it possible to bruise your eyeball?

My schooling whip pinged out of the cupboard and hit me square in the eyeball. It's now red on one side and hurts like hell

Eye lid is a bit puffy too.

Your eyeball can swell due to an external blow. I've just had a look on the NHS site.

Speak to your GP immediately if you have any of the following:

•persistent eye pain

•foreign bodies that can't be washed out

•blurred and decreased vision

•flashing lights, spots or shapes made up of shadows in your field of vision

•redness in the eye, particularly around your iris (the coloured part of the eye that controls the amount of light that enters)

•pain when exposed to bright light

•an eye injury as a result of an object hitting your eye at high speed

Do you have an out of hours GP or walk-in centre nearby? If it's painful but not causing sight issues it's probably best to avoid A&E.

I would like to avoid A&E if I can, there is a walk in place open at 8am.

Sight is ok and it's just localised pain so should be ok to wait.

If you do go, if you see a kid with a saucepan on his head, please, please let me know. When I was a kid, there was always a kid with a saucepan on his head in any medical scene in The Beano and I've yet to see it and I feel as though I must.

When I went to the out of hours doctor the other week, I was let down then, so this may be my next best chance.

I have encountered a few kids that need one on their head

Apart from that it's the already suggested cold compress then. Please accept this message as a long distance hand hold, back rub and "there, there".

Hope you get it sorted.

Birmingham (3nts)

You only have two eyes.

Can't do ocular transplants, yet.

Get to the doc's or if you can't get there - see an optician.

Even though it seems to be getting better.

My dad once got smacked in the eye with a squash Ball. Thought nothing of it at the time but when he was at the pub after his mate kept staring at him.

My dad got a bit weirded out and asked him what was wrong and he said he could see something sloshing around in his eye.

He went to the hospital who said he'd ruptured a blood vessel and he had to wear an eye patch for a while. What his friend could see was the blood pooling in his eye.

Nothing sloshing round here

It is slightly blood shot on one side but looks like there is a scratch so heading to the doctors this morning.

This or just pop into your opticians and ask if they can have a quick look (they have the required equipment, your gp doesn't and most A&E departments/walk in centres don't either).

Oh man, where do I go?

I could go to the opticians or there is a walk in centre.

Want to avoid A&E as it isn't an emergency. Should clarify the blood shot/red bit isn't near my iris bit it's just on the white bit.

Def not A&E. Waiting around for hours on end to be told to go to an optician. I'd go to an optician if I were you, as Mr who says they have all the equipment needed or if you have one an eye hospital.

Maybe ring them while waiting for your shopping to arrive and see what they suggest.

If your vision isn't impaired and the swelling and redness is reducing, not getting worse then I'd probably apply a cold compress a couple of times a day and see how it is after a few days. Nothing worse than going to the doctors/A&A to be told there's nothing more than slight bruising. If in doubt pop to the opticians and just ask for advice. They'll have a really good idea if you should be concerned...

I'm very surprised you got seen as a walk in by an optician. Obviously I can't talk for all opticians but the policy of the large opticians company that I work for is to send any cases such as yours straight to eye casualty
