I think it's aimed more towards people who may start smoking.. Branding sells, regardless of what it may be- hence why there's such a huge market in fake designer goods as opposed to "real" ones.. Some people but into an image and may start smoking because the packaging appeals to them etc.. |

People don't start smoking cos they like the packet they start smoking cos they're 12 and their mates are doing it. Most peoples first fags are any brand the relative they stole them from smokes. And they come crumpled in fluff filled pockets. Packaging makes not one jot of a difference. Did people stop when they wrote SMOKING KILLS on the packets? |

It's a publicity stunt. The pics of cancer ridden lungs and dead bodies that they put on the packs didn't have the desired effect either. Now, oh, "let's put them in plain boxes, that'll cut down smokers"! Laughable really.
And, if they did somehow manage to miraculously make people stop smoking, where are they going to get all the tax that they would lose?

Sorry but I totally disagree there! People start smoking for a number of reasons and if you honestly think branding makes no difference at all, then you go against the millions of pounds spent each year on advertising and branding!!
As said in my previous post, "SOME" people may start because of how it looks... I smoked in my teens because I wanted to try Malborough Lights because I thought they were "cool" and wanted to flash the packet around like it was some sort of trophy.. I had absolute no desire to smoke a "cheap" brand.. I also didn't have any relatives who smoked, so nicking fags wasn't an option either..
If it deters a few people from starting up, then surely that's of some benefit?!
Either way, don't be so naive to think that everyone starts smoking for the same reasons.. |

i'm not advocating smoking in any way whatsoever, read my posts back, what we were discussing is whether it is ethically correct for the govt to have dbl standards like - "here, buy these!" , "don't smoke it'll kill u!".

Lol the same people who make the laws are the ones selling it. I wonder how accepting you would be if they made heroin legal and sold that in plain packets
If a heroin user is the victim of the drug dealer, then isn't a tobacco user the victim of the tobacco dealer?

speaking from my own observations, generally, people smoke what their parents smoke/
or what their mates smoke.
both my brothr smoke the same as my parents used to, even now 20odd years after they started, and 13 years after my parents gave up.
its not through branding, its through availability and then acquiring the taste for that brand.
the ONLY way they would be attractive to kids would be if they were in boxes with action man/hello kitty/moshi monsters and so on, on them.
kids dont get hooked on smoking because they are in a blue/black/silver packet, but because it is still socially acceptable to smoke.
if the government really do have such a problem with it, then ban them all together, or leave people alone to make an educated choice themselves.

It's about outcomes, not processes. The govt can alter tax rates at will. Use tax to price the product out of the reach of many and you achieve the desired outcome. No legal challenges.

My main amongst others is problem with this how how will we know if they are real or fake cigs go down Lincoln Road in Peterborough and most of the shops have been raided for imported cigs x And will it apply to supermarkets only or wil newsagents have to do it too because we can still go in and see what we want to buy x |
