gangs and gang culture needs to be smashed in my opinion, its a cancer on our society and it needs to be removed from it if we want to save the future generations

Look back through history and gangs and gang culture have been a perennial problem. The Roman's had it, we've had it for 100s of years, The USSR had it and they used to ship them out to Siberia (didn't cure the problem), so I don't think it will get smashed any time soon, I'm afraid

the main difference with the gangs in the report is that there is a cultural scene around it like music etc that glamourises gang culture, this was the words of a ex female gang member.

There is always something that forms a focus, whether it be a 'outside' form of music, or a chariot racing team, or even a football team. There are a few good books on this topic out there

"i have read a few and they were all enlightening in their own way however its the issue of sex, rape and their general treatment of girls within the gang which as just shocked me."

its accepted 'practise' in some gangs in South London that part of the initiation for young girls to enter the female gangs is to be gang raped by some of the associated male gangs..

im not naive, i know there are some really nasty people out there, however i cannot believe that all these kids in gangs are all bad and that they cannot be bought back from the brink.

i just cannot see how it can be allowed when we have witnessed all this in the states 15 yrs ago.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

The treatment of girls and young women as currency, as a mules and safe storage for guns and knives has been going on for years. When girls and young women try to move out of gangs they are often raped, hit or cut.

Where I have seen successful interventions it has been on changing the way the boys and young men view girls and young women.

Gangs fill a need for many of these boys and young men to have male role models in their lives. If the model is flawed it doesn't matter because they are getting a sense of belonging that they struggle to find elsewhere.

The girls and young women want to be desirable to the alpha males in their society. They have poor role models too and have not grasped their own self respect yet.

Gangs have always existed but more members die now. We dismiss them as someone elses problem and too difficult. We have removed the things that provide positive activities, like youth clubs, as they cost too much. The costs of our lack of care cost much more though: pregnancy, policing, hospitals for stabs and gun shot wounds and in the death of young lives.

If you feel strongly, give up some of your time and adopt a young person to mentor, particularly men please. Show them a different way. It's not easy, it's hard work, you get no thanks for it for a very long time and then one day you see a change and it is worth it.

i have coached young tear aways etc in the past and still do at the rugby club and my success rate is about 80%, however i only get them if the right police officer/station deals with them.

sport is a great way for young men to vent off their anger learn discipline and work together as a team.

boxing & rugby are very good examples.
