Was just checking out a few profiles, and it got me thinking about this word. Ok, most people on here who consider themselves slim/muscular and fit would describe themselves as athletic, but beyond looking good, do you have any sort of athletic 'feats' you're good at?
Are you a good fast/long distance runner/swimmer? Who can jump over a gate? Are you notably strong at the gym, can you do 60 press ups in a minute etc? |

my nan always used to be disappointed because she could never 'toss off up against a wall.
apparently in the 40's, this is terminology for a hand stand against a wall.
meant something very different when she told us a few years back |

And you've never taken a pic?
I did have one on here years ago"
Try doing a handstand in a maxi dress and no knickers, now that'd make for a great pic |

There is some guy on here who lists himself as athletic when clearly his athletic ability is writing inflammatory posts about people being stuck up on here and bemoaning his luck.
His body says otherwise.
In other news I would list my partner as Athletic she does 3 day eventing and her body is punished by it but her tone is amazing she is one tough cookie as hard as I beat her ass it never leaves a mark and the safe word has never passed her lips. |

athletic is as ambiguous as curvy, to my mind.
ranges from mo farrah to giant haystacks, and all could proclaim to be athletetic because they do sport.
some linemen in american football are huge units, but couldnt run a marathon, whereas marathon runners would get snapped in half playing rugby
all are valid |

Don't describe myself as athletic but cycle a fair bit and can do 100+ mile rides, average 17mph over a hilly 50 mile route etc. - although that hurts!
I'm only 5'2" and weigh 9.5 stone do not a particularly 'athletic' build. |

It's all the time spent in the saddle. People who think sitting on a horse while it's goes full pelt over a cross country horse is not athletic are sadly mistaken she has such power in her thighs bum and back! |

I don't doubt you, being able to hold yourself still in the saddle, especially when standing requires you to tense muscles from your head to your toes, I can see why so many professional jockeys both male and female have very firm looking legs. |

Turbo's really aren't fun but my cycling mate is bloody fast so i need all the help u can get to stay on his wheel!
Different sports require different types of fitness. I heard Sonny Bill Williams of New Zealand say that tackles are bigger in League due to the 3/4 man tackles, but Rugby players are far more aerobically fit. |

Evil, evil things! But for fitness you can't beat them. Chris hoy had a sick bucket and a mattress next to his, can't be good for you! |

I used to event, ride for hours every day and then go dancing nearly every night. I haven't got any horses for the first time in 30 years and I've put quite a bit of weight on, but I can still dance lindyhop non-stop for hours while people half my age flag! I'll have to get on the bike if I don't find another horse soon though.... |

I think that makes a big difference - mine is naturally around 48, so I've always been a stayer.

Long story, but a while back i wound up in hospital with a suspected heart attack. Did loads of tests at two different hospitals (incl a specialist unit in Manchester) and nothing could be found. Eventually someone asked if i did any sport as i had an unusually low heart rate. Told them i cycled a bit and was thrown out in disgust!
It turns out there is a type of heart attack where your heart rate drops markedly and i managed to fool the machine in the ambulance! |

i ( Mr ) used to be a semi pro motorbike racer ( motogp style ) and had to keep fit for that as its alot of upper body strength needed.
i cycle about 120 a week and go to gym 3 times a week .
tho i wouldn't say i.m athletic or overly muscled ....more toned than muscle .
my party piece is drinking a pint of milk ( dont drink beer ) whilst stood on my head .....does that make me an athlete ? lol |

I can school a horse for over an hour but can't even run for the bus
Using my legs I can push a large rectangular haylage bale (and my bum, I wedge myself in) |

Haha, you think they would've asked first!! When not carrying extra weight I used to class my *shape* as athletic, because my shoulders are actually wider than my hips which is the opposite to most women, I was always a more sporty type of frame. |

Interesting how 'fitness' is extremely specific. The keeping of horses is a bit like weight training with all the lifting of bales etc, and schooling is more about core-stabilising strength than fitness too. My dancing is much more aerobic, but the horse work kept me strong.
I can dance fast fast hours, but if I walk further than normal I can feel it in my legs - wierd. |

Athletic is a sports man or woman who is a Track and Field Athlete.
So really runners and alike.
Muscle bound types are not this.

We had this debate a while back. If the definition is track and field then one would have to allow marathon runners and shot putters alike the title! Besides, some 100metre runners are pretty damn muscley, phwoa.... |

That's because sprinting is more about power rather than endurance, many sprinters are magnificently muscled. |

As with all the other description options, there's a lot of room for interpretation.
Decent, accurate photos are the key. And a cam chat and/or social meet to be certain.
I think I am large, other women with my body shape choose ample or curvy. It ain't an exact science. |

Google image Michael Rasmussen and there are some pictures of him topless. And believe me it is not a healthy look. And their are some pictures of Bradley Wiggins where his limbs look so skinny it is pretty disturbing. I met Dan Lloyd a few years ago just before he rode the tour de france. Even dressed in civvys and in a room full of cyclists he was noticably skinnier than anyone else present. At the top levels, it really isn;t healthy. |

Slim is rarely muscular a couple of arm pimples and ribs showing through don't make you that way. Athletic is often different and only a few athletes are skinny as exercise builds you up. |

there is a tribe of 'ultra runners' who most people would consider skinny ...they have competed in conventional marathons ie new york marathon, and no one gets anywhere near them ...however they leave the race before crossing the line as they do not want to be in the spot light ..i could consider these guys extremely athletic !

Give them some weights and see how they do. Nothing wrong with running but you don't build up a solid physique and they avoid doing so but sprinters are totally different to marathonites and have an all round better physique. . |

every time this comes up people seem to think athletic means what you do
its a description of body type.
marathon runners are better suited to ticking slim.
it gives us a good laugh how some consider themselves athletic.

"when nik looks for athletic, archangel is what she wants and dribbles over
not some skinny lad or bloke with fat around his midrift"
How much fat you store around your waist, especially in the lower abdomen is largely genetic. Even when I make a concerted effort to get leaner I can only get my abs 'visible' rather than that hard, etched in look guys like archangel have, and even then have to concentrate on what I eat to maintain that level of leanness.
...I can lift big things though |

Hmmm...
My shoulders are broader than my hips - check
I can lift/move heavy weights, certainly heavier than average for my sex and size (I can leg press 90kg 3 x 8) - check
I am not skinny - check
Yay I am athletic!
