I (hubby) go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week, occasionally do some cardio stuff but mainly swimming(though I'm not the strongest swimmer).

Didn't realise just how hard front crawl is, I can do 20 or 30 lengths breast stroke no problem, but my mate bet me £10 quid I couldn't do 4 lengths of crawl without stopping (around 100 metres)

After about 80 I thought I was going to have a heart attack - if it had been £1000 I would have kept at it, but not for a tenner!!!!

I quite like butterfly - it is usually one more suited to men because of upper body strength and in fairness I cant do it for very long.

When I was at high school I swam 12 times a week. I did a 5 mile swimathon years back so swimming is my thing.

My most stylish stroke is back stroke. My fastest is front crawl. Love breast stroke for endurance so a mix of lots.

I used to swim in my age range with a lady who swam for county. We used to swim the 100m butterfly. She had always finished her last length and I was still trawling on lol. She had shoulders like mad and I at the time was tiny lol. I also still love to dive. Great fun x

Dont even go there, my boobs fell out in an ill fitting swimming costume once, the poor lifeguard bumped into the lockers looking at me trying to shove em back in and try and maintain my modesty.

no matter

I can only Breast Stroke , never learnt the crawl tho I can swim a sort of on my side stroke and I can stay afloat in the pool whilst chatting in a barely moving upright position that makes people laugh.

Front crawl for me, mainly upper body and legs are there for stability and flotation.

Getting your breathingb right b is the key and is excellent for increasing your lung capacity and aerobic

I (Mr) used to swim at county level. I can still hold my own in freestyle (Front Crawl).

Try alternating each length.

Like easy Breast Stroke up the length and sprint freestyle back. Groups of 4 with 30 seconds rest, then groups of 8. You will gain more if you alternate strokes and mix in sprints.

The problems you have with your fly kick sounds like you are kicking from your knees. The fly kick starts at your chest and moves in a wave all the way through your body using your core muscle groups. If you kick from the knee you lose all that power.

Try doing just fly kicks with a kick board then without the board. If you cando them underwater it is great for cardio vascular fitness.

Oops I waffled sorry lol

Given a choice I like to do it on my back!

I haven't been for a few years but am planning on going at least twice a week to start & hope to incorporate a lot of walking too.

Front crawl is hard work

Front crawl is easier than a lot of people think. IF your doing it right. Your arms should never come right out and over, its a waste of energy. As soon as they are clear of the water, bend the elbow as you rotate your shoulder. Then as you straighten the arm again it will be going back into the water.

The ratio of breaths to strokes is important to. A lot of people don't like to keep their face in the water and so keep looking straight ahead, this gives a lot of resistance. Get your face in and slowly breathe out as you stroke. When your right arm is coming under the water, and starts trailing, then twist your head to the right. Take a breath, and face back down as your right arm comes back out of the water.

It's easier to show you!

My first length in a swimming session is done, without coming up for air. 12 seconds I can manage, only one though.

Somewhere in North Norfolk

I prefer front crawl except I've lost the knack of the breathing so it's difficult. These days swimming for me is some sort of brute force battle of me vs. the water!

I can still swim a mile (64 and a bit lengths) in one session, albeit a lot more slowly than I used to but I am absolutely wiped out for a few hours afterwards.

I really need some technique lessons to get me back on track.

Ask at you local pool, there are qualified people there. You probably don't even need a lesson as such. Just ask one of the lifeguards, a lot of them are qualified to teach as well.

this. Crawl is one of easiest and relaxing strokes when done properly as it is very efficient. You don't have to be thrashing and swinging your head from side to side. Try to glide with one arm outstretched (like superman) lying on your side and get as much out of that position before you bring the other hand over and in front. It's not quick but it becomes almost effortless

Back crawl. I like going up and down the pool at a leisurely pace. I just have to be careful not to hit my hands and head when I reach the end

Has to be front crawl or breastroke for the majority of the time but swam butterfly for the city team until 15yo, so throw in a length of fly every so often. I learned fly kixk underwater and watching man from Atlantis

I notice when I swim properly now that I don't swim regularly enough. Doing frontcrawl properly my shoulders begin to ache.

I forget that my body doesn't get to move like that often enough now. So what never used to ache now makes me stiff and I notice it the following day.

And from the look of your lovely pics swimming properly is not the only thing that would make me feel stiff..albeit a different muscle
