My workmate found one to Tenerife once for £1.20 one way. Obviously there were taxes on top of that.

I think most sites include the taxes which is why they're not that cheap any more, but I managed to find flights to Marrakech with Easyjet for £88 both ways. Unfortunately we are landing in the UK at stupid o'clock, so that's why they're cheap.

Think they have to put in all the extras that they hid before and then you ended up paying £45 for the £5 flight.

You can still get good deals out there if you look

A couple of years ago Debs and I went to Dublin for a couple of days for the princely sum of £0.12 return. That was all we had to pay but I don't think that happens nowadays.

Finnair are doing return flights to Thailand for £500. It's just a case of looking at all the websites.

I think you win ! wow that's amazing. I've found a cheap place in Sicily but trying to get there and working on school holiday times is proving either impossible or very very expensive.

Too true. Though the Finnair ones are from Manchester Airport which saves me the cost of getting to Heathrow.

Funnily enough though when I first went to Thailand in 1991 the flights were about £450 so they haven't gone up much at all.

Those flights are cheaper than a train is costing me from Hertfordshire to Nottingham next week. Cheap is a relative term.

we use flights all the time, being in a LDR that involved different countries.

but travel between ireland and the UK every other week for between £50 and £100 return, which, as has been said, would be what it would cost to go out with someone that lived a fair distance away in the UK

Ryanair fly from Stanstead to Palermo and Luton and Manchester to Trapani.

Have you tried skyscanner? Not all the budget airlines show up but it does give you airlines you might not have thought of trying.

And depending on which part of sicily it might be worth seeing who flies into Reggio Calabria.

Thank you but they seem to be really expensive now. I'm sure we flew with them last time in 2010 and got a great deal.

Easyjet fly to Catania from Gatwick, Luton and Manchester. And to Palermo from Gatwick.

Reggio Calabria is on mainland Italy (in the toe) but it's just a short ferry ride to north eastern sicily.

we're looking at north west - San Vito La Copa

The best I've seen is Alitalia from Heathrow. But it would mean taking daughter out of school for one day, and I don't think the schools allow this now.

The school sent a letter out a few months back saying even dentists and doctors appointments should be done during holidays

Wish me luck!

Awww that sucks. Can't she *ahem* get sick coincidentally just before the hols? The last day before they break-up is always a slack one anyway.

Seriously, the amount of money I've saved now I don't have to holiday in the school hols. Holiday companies should feel ashamed hiking the prices up so much.

its all gone Pete Tongue.

Had to change destination and can only get flights cheaply by stopping on the way there and on the way back.

The flight prices practically double for school holiday time

The school holiday prices are disgusting I don't know how they can get away with it,

up here they can fine you 100 quid for taking your child out of school, but you save 300 to 400 on holiday prices so it's worth the fine if there not doing gcse's or a levels

I was able to fly to Lisbon for £51 all in last year.

I don't care that there was no meal or anything as it's only two and a half hours

good luck getting your kids to be ill only when the holidays come along and as for dentist appointments....tens of thousands of kids trying to get in in the same 3 week period? are these people living on the same planet as the rest of us?

"The school holiday prices are disgusting "

What's the alternative?put a levy on all the other holiday makers to make it the same price? If it's the same price then they may as well go at peak times as well then there won't be enough places for the families.

Just look forward to the kids growing up and the cheap holidays you can have then.

We dont do too bad at all but I do all my research and specialise in budget travel. For example we are going to prague in jan for 3 nights for £90pp with private taxi and usual hotel included, berlin for 2 nights in feb for £50pp and then spain for a week in april for £135pp. The best package we had last year was a week to Malia last minute in june for £115 and then a few years ago 2 weeks in Rhodes for £125. June sees a decline in travel and with peak time hotels to fill, last minute package deals with the likes of Thomas cook are a must.

The deals are out there if you know the tricks with dates, prepared for sometimes crap flights and know your suppliers, although flight only is nowhere as cheap as before.

Yeah, but having seen Airline on the telly I'd never use one.

Who needs that potential ass-ache on your hols?..

I'd rather pay the extra £50 quid and fly BA

If people turn up on time and stick to what the terms of travel are then theres no problem. Our last 4 flights have been with Easyjet with 2 more coming up and we havent had a single delay or drama. Just a professional service all round especially since Carolyn McCall has taken the reins. Shes done wonders for Easyjet and raised their profile incredibly from the days of 'Airline' circa early-mid 00's.

Besides, after Airline aired it led to an increase in customers and profit, not bad to say it was showing them in a bad light.
