GB has given 50,000,000 aid to the Philippines

I think I hope it helps to save lives and put people back on their feet, I hope it gets there quickly and helps to prevent the almost inevitable cholera outbreak. I also think that there will be some people who will resent us giving it. |

has to be done.
Too many people would suffer if this money is not made available. I know this country is short of money, as we all are. but if we refuse to help in times of genuine crisis then we would not be British. |

"what do you think ? "
I think it proves what I've said on here before. There's no shortage of money should the UK wish to find it.
The coalition just don't want to spend it on British folk who are cold and hungry. |

Annoys me how everyone says this county is really hard up. Yes there are a small proportion of people who genuinely really struggle and they've lost thier jobs and I feel for them but there are also a lot of people who moan they haven't got much money and yet they have internet, a mobile phone contract, possibly satellite tv and some of them will smoke too. Right to give the money where it is truly needed |

You can't do right for doing wrong. Does make me think gov cutting back on vital services because aint got money then all of a sudden a big sum like that appears. Not saying they don't deserve it god bless them all. |

I think this is also true, there are budgets for everything and God forbid that the money in one budget should be moved into another.
This is a problem that should be addressed urgently along with the "scrounger" vs "hardworking British people" mentality that has been encouraged |

It's less than one lottery win.
I would give more.
If it's not given you won't get it anyway.
Some people have lost whole families. Some have no fresh water. Most have no home , food or emotional support...
There should be no hesitation from anyone in giving .......question it later maybe but don't take it out on the victims. |

I think is is absolutely the right thing to do, have you seen the scale of the devastation out there, this is just a drop in the ocean of it will be needed to rebuild their country.
Is this what the government has pledged or what has been donated by the public.
This is an awful situation and brought tears to my eyes when I saw the people on the news explaining what had happened to their families. |

Fine with me. I decided this week to donate a large amount of money to charity (large by my standards that is) this week.
I had two charities in mind. Children in need or RedCross for this disaster. I chose the latter. They need the most basic human requirements food and shelter. |

I truly despair sometimes. £50m is fuck all squared in the scheme of things and with 3,500 reported deaths (UNCHR estimates the final toll will exceed 15,000) It could equate to £3,500 per death..........or about £40 for each of the living who are displaced or injured. it should have been double that amount we could have flogged two euro fighters to fund it! |

My brother is over there with his wife and two young babies he emigrated over there a few years ago and his house is gone his wife and daughters are now getting sick and they have no food or water, we have no way of getting money to them as the banks and western unions have all been decimated , do i think we have done the right thing is sending all that money over there in one sense yes as they are completely wiped out and have no hope at the moment but i also wonder why not enough is being done here in our own country to help those in vunerable positions, its a no win situation but i would hope that if we were in the same position the rest of the world would help us |

I am not angry at foreign aid - I understand its purpose. I get cross at the lack of humanity I see spouted on here.
As to this government not spending money on people here, yes I get very angry at that. It is an ideological decision and instead of the electorate being angry at that ideology they buy the line that it is necessary and worse that it is the fault of the 'scroungers' that 'worthy, deserving' poor people have to suffer.
I don't confuse or conflate what is happening here with what is happening in the rest of the world and the human response to that. |

More than that, I have been to foodbanks to offer my help. It is just not the same thing and pretty abhorrent to liken people with no access to food and clean water living on top of the rubble of their dead to those in this country queuing for food. |

Don't forget, the bulk of the money 'given to the Philippines' doesn't actually get to poor people who are dying in the street.
Most of it is used to rebuild roads, harbours, airstips and the like. Step forward Aggreko, Lend Lease, Balfours etc - all Tory donors. |

I do believe we should help, but i don't think we should have given £50m.
What if every other large nation gives that amount, Germany, France, China, Japan, America , Australia just to name a few, that's an awful lot of money, if them 7 nations alone give then that's £350m
If it is only us giving £50m , then why are we giving so much ?
Our country is in a right mess, what with cut backs to our policing, fire service & nhs !!
That amount of money could go along way into help saving lives in our own country before we help others .
And would most countries give to us if it happened to us ?? I very much doubt it, |

With a 'no one would help us so we shouldn't help them' attitude that becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
Most of the British aid will be spent on work that contractors will do. Countries closer to the Philippines have been donating food and water. A lot of our aid has been to supply the infrastructure that supports the aid workers, including their food, water, showers and beds. |

Totally agree with giving aid to disaster victims like this.
Only thing that angers me is lack of support to our own.
A friend of mine has been flooded out of his home for the second time in 3 years. Also lost his car this time. But gets no help, probably wont be able to get any sort of insurance again & cant sell. But council neglect/apathy cause the problem |

This us and them attitude is what makes me sick.
We are all human beings, citizens of this world, be compassionate and help each other and help the most in need first.
There is plenty of money to help the needy in this country the government just choose not to, get angry at the goverment but dont take it out on other human beings totally destitute somewhere else.
If your gonna get angry about anything get angry about the goverment keeping the rich rich and the poor poorer and turning people against the most needy in this country. The distribution of wealth is the real problem, the elite classes living it up while everyone else suffers and fight over the scraps and turn on each other while they sit back laughing because the attention has been diverted off of themselves.
I dont begrudge a penny of that money going to the phillipines, they are totally destitute on a scale you just cannot compare to anything we have experienced over here. If it saves lives and stops disease breaking out large scale then im all for it. |

Children in need is on over this weekend !
If our government spent money on our country before every other country the places we all seen lastnight that can only survive to open 3-4 days a week, as it depends on the likes of children in need money, wouldn't need to depend on the public giving, that doesn't mean to say I didn't give any money towards it.
Thers a lot of sick, disabled, handicapped & very under privaliged people in our country we should be looking at helping before we help others.

If it saves lives and stops disease breaking out large scale then im all for it."

"what do you think ?
I think it proves what I've said on here before. There's no shortage of money should the UK wish to find it.
The coalition just don't want to spend it on British folk who are cold and hungry."

"Children in need is on over this weekend !
Genuine question, do you see it as a solely the governments responsibility to provide all these services?"
The government has to act as a provider of last resort.
If a disabled child it born to a parent or parents who simply cannot care for that child, should it be allowed to die of neglect in a corner somewhere?
The real question isn't should the government get involved, but how best the government can get involved. |

"......
Have you seen the pictures of people living in amongst the putrefaction of their loved ones bodies?
Have you seen the pictures of people queueing at foodbanks?
More than that, I have been to foodbanks to offer my help. It is just not the same thing and pretty abhorrent to liken people with no access to food and clean water living on top of the rubble of their dead to those in this country queuing for food."

It doesn't have to be a choice.
We can do both. |

I meant it as in, if the government used all it's finances to help said charities, they wouldn't have to depend on such fund raising as much.
Same as in all of the governments cost cutting here there & everywhere !
There's a lot of help needed in the nursing profession as it was on the news earlier, they're understaffed, over worked & underpaid.
Same as the police & fire brigade
The fire brigade went on strike because of such things,
There's a lot of fat cats raking in public money & as I said earlier, I honestly do not mind helping the people of the Philippines out, but £50m is way far more than they should in my eyes, I do hope it helps them out, but there's a hell lot of things in our country that £50m could go towards to help sort out the mess it is in.

"i just hope the money gets to the people who really need it,so much of aid money stays in the bank accounts of the people who are doing the admin of the aid,,and thats the truth,,,
Or in the pockets (swiss bank accounts) of the ruling classes
It is rarely handed over as money."
I hope they receive all the aid they require, from every quarter.
I also hope we give much more, and I hope we give it quickly.
There but for the grace of God go I. |

£50m really is not a lot in terms of government money. Don't forget the budget for HS2 is £40bn. How many £50 millions is that?

I always find it a bit weird, there are many people saying we should be supporting our troops(which is absolutely fine) who are fighting abroad...but forgetting the billions that costs(and the actual purpose????!?)
Then they start complaining about our poverty in this country and its not getting sorted out
We spend billions on war..but people are complaining we are spending a fraction of that to provide humanitarian assistance
Wonder if people complain when our military start assisting other countries during tragic events |

"I'm glad we have given this money. The only thing im not sure of does this £50m include the £30m that people gave donated to DEC in the last 3 days or is it in addition to that money. its in addition "
Let's add a bit of perspective, the total listed above is still less than was paid for Gareth Bale! What kind of state is this planet in when people moan about providing aid to a devastated country but then go out on a Saturday afternoon and worship 22 overpaid morons kicking a ball for 90mins. |

A very good point. You have reminded me of the threads on this forum about the cost of footballers and so many saying they had earned it/are worth it. It's their money paying for it and just as with taxes they have no control how it is spent.

"Turns out many of the survivors have headed off to church this morning - to give thanks "
In one way I would imagine they are thankful for their lives, but on the other hand I imagine they also think it would be easier if they had lost their lives. |

You'd think, as Dog-botherers, they might be a bit pissed off at whichever Deity which sent the typhoon in the first place. |
