Well done hottie. Your latest pics prove you are working hard.
Some advise please. My daughter has asked for a treadmill for Christmas. They are quite expensive though. She is overweight but she has joined weightwatchers and this is really helping (lost 1 1/2 stone this year) but she has reached a plateau. They have advised her to excersise but she really doesn't have time. Studying for A levels and all that. Would a treadmill be a good investment , is it good for weight loss ? |

Sorry, but I reckon it'd just end up being an expensive clothes horse ...
With studying she needs time out, away from her room, not the occasional few minutes on a treadmill. Get her a three month gym membership, and join with her, get fit together, and get her nose out of her books |

It depends. I don't have the focus to do anything at home. I just won't stick at it. So even tho I say id love an exercise bike at home I know damn well it wouldn't get used!!!
The treadmill is good for calorie burning, as is the rower, cross trainer and the bike but tbh there are much cheaper ways to burn calories that won't be as annoying if they don't get used as you won't have spent a fortune.
Id say a years gym membership would be better and cheaper than the treadmill or if not a step, some dumbells and a 30 day shred DVD will be just as productive for home at a fraction of the price x |

Thanks Fox Hat and Hottie.
We've tried the gym but she is painfully shy and it didn't work at all. I think Hotties idea of a DVD , step and dumbbells is probably the way to go. Then if she shows a willingness to excersise then maybe progress from there.
Sorry for hijacking your thread Hottie.
Cor lovely arse BTW

You're welcome. I think a few little bits will be better than one big item so she can mix it up a bit. Just running on a treadmill will get incredibly boring. If she gets some good trainers and some tunes on an iPod tell her to go running around a local park or something! Totally free and there's apps that can tell you how far you've gone etc.
Also with the diet she's obviously done brilliantly well on weight watchers but maybe she could consider trying something else for a bit. Your body kinda gets used to things after a while x |

We are really proud of her. She has changed her bad eating habits completely. We now just have to work on her confidence. She's a very studious girl who's idea of a good night is sitting in with a book. |

Everyone has time to exercise...
My opinion is that a treadmill at home is a waste of money. She'd be better off with gym membership. Or even just incorporating light exercise in to her daily routine. Even walking to college would help. |

She has started walking everywhere within a half hours distance. A gym is not really for her at moment. She is quite determined to be more healthy and she is making good progress. |

Diet is always going to be the easier route to lose weight, cutting 1000 calories from your daily intake is much easier than burning 1000I a say in the gym |

Easiest way to get your time down... think of some of the less likely candidates you get mail from and imagine they are behind you asking if you have read their message and can you be their friend, all the time winking at you
Well done on the 5km though. |

1000 calories a day??? Sod that!! Id rather eat well but healthily and do some exercise as well. Balance is they key for me. No point barely eating anything then still being unfit x |

If she gets in to the routine of walking and sticks to the dieting I suspect that should keep the momentum going.
The problem with a treadmill is that tgey are mentally tough because they are so boring. The danger is that she'll lose enthusiasm for exercise because she associates exercise with boredom. |

I think all the advise on a treadmill us very helpful. I doubt I'll get one for her just yet. If she shows enthusiasm for exercising with a few little bits that she'll get then we'll take it from there. Thanks |

I'd only done 2.5 up till today. (Since I started back at the gym again) told my friend who's a PT and teaches about 20 exercise classes a week and she said 'oh we can do 10k next' |

One of the things is to set yourself a goal
Don't be shy but try a running community or group (Sweatshop are excellent at this)
Maybe enter a 5k or even 10k event- the feeling of crossing that finishing line is euphoric (mostly, sometimes she relief! )
If I didn't have these races throughout the year it'd be difficult to motivate myself sometimes
Next up is a Santa Dash with the family, fun for everyone |

I'm doing the sport relief 5k in March and my dad has mentioned doing a race with him (he actually said triathlon but I think that's about ambitious considering I could only do 2 lengths of front crawl the other day!!) I would love to do a race with my dad!! |

There're actually quite a lot of ten milers starting out there now ...
A nice step up from the 10km to half marathon.
I'm entering the Rhyl 10 mile in Feb, and seeing it as training for the Chester half marathon in May |

Funnily enough I've just entered my first 10 miler on December 29th. Was initially planned to force me to run over the festive period and nothing more than a training run as I build up to my first marathon but I'm actually really looking forward tp trying a new distance particularly as I've struggled at the end of my last 2 halves. Plus I'm ending the year with a guaranteed PB! |

Oh I'll do that tomorrow then
Keep going like you are and you could easily do it before the end of February
I normally only go mon, weds, fri but as I was still feeling a bit horrendous yesterday I went today instead. So what do you think I should do tomorrow? Just a shorter run? Or as far as I can again? X "
I've pm'd you. X |

"Update.... Did 8km in 58 mins today. Was going for 10 but was feeling like I might puke!! lol x
You do realise once you've done 10km the next progressive step will be to think about a half marathon...
Errrrr...... 10k is 6 miles right? A half marathon is a lot more isn't it 12 or 13??
Yeah twice what you've ran today and another 5km on top! Walk in the park so to speak.

Take it easy tomorrow, don't keep pushing yourself. Mix it up a bit, try some sprints and walks (fartleks) or even increase the gradient
You should try a planner ... plenty of apps for iphones and androids.
I use Adidas miCoach and it will tailor your workouts from a beginner to a 2 1/2 hour marathon |

It's a new one for me too
I could never do a marathon ....
Never say never lol
But I don't think I'd have the time to put the training in "
Good luck in it then
I have mixed thoughts about a marathon. I've got 2 lined up in spring, Manchester because it is pan flat and 7 weeks later the Liverpool rock n roll because it looks fun! But the training load is huge and I share the reservations about committing time. Halves are comparitively easy to train for and are inevitably logistically easier to race so I may stick to them in the future. |

I love everything about park run just wish I had a local one these days. I love the fact that olmpians turn up to some, that there are numerous sub 18 mimute runners but people stay and applaud those that take more than twice that. I love that my friend does it every week with his 2 year old son in a buggy. The inclusiveness and encouraging attitude that is at the very core of the park run ethos is something all sports and indeed society can learn from. |

You should download Runkeeper onto your phone!!.. It's pretty cool!!
Keeps a log of every training session you do, uses GPS so your runs/distances are accurate.
And shows you a map of where you ran.....
No, I'm not on commission by the way!
I do at least 10k everyday, and use Runkeeper to keep track of everything!

They are organised free weekly timed 5k runs. Not sure whereabouts in kent you are but there are currently ones in Ashford, maidstone, Margate, Tonbridge and Whistable. You are usually done on a saturday around 9-10am. Take a look on www.parkrun.org.uk |

Today Iwent for a run fir the first time since my niggling injuries have cleared. managed to run 4k which was pleasing.
I think the cold wweather has put me off a little. The whole forcing yourself to get out there. Bit now I've been and it wasn't so bad I will keep going. (benefits of a day at home took lunch break early)
Wore my new running top and Gillette that evie bought me, and was nice and snug. |
