Hi men need a bit of help/advice please I've been going gym since July and go 5 /6 times aweek I started off by doing cardio and lost 3 stone in 3 months (went from 18st 12 to 15st 10 diet dramatically changed when started gym). Now I still have a bit of a belly and the instructor said I should start using weights to help tone my muscle up so been doing weights on alternate days to cardio for last three weeks. The thing is my belly still looks the same and my weight is going up and down by a couple of lbs each week when I weigh my self ,I know muscle weighs heavier than fat but I'm starting to get peed off that my belly is not shifting and not losing weight , should I stick to cardio till belly is flat then tone up or keep mixing cardio and weights and carry on hoping that I will loose my inches rather than weight
Thanks for reading |

Stop going altogether for a while, eat healthily and let your body stabilise for a while |

You mean you've just been dieting and doing cardio with no weight exercises?
When you diet, you're essentially starving yourself. Up to a point this is ok if you have a lot of fat to lose, but there comes a point where the bodies survival mechanisms kick in (as it thinks you're literally starving) and it starts to eat lean tissue (ie muscle) instead. This is why its important that when exercising, you do plenty of weightlifting too, as this will greatly slow the rate of muscle lost, and you could even consider easing up on the diet and cardio too if you do decide to pursue the weights, and you'll find the extra muscle you build will increase your metabolism. |

Actually yes.
Do your cardio after your weights you'll burn more fat.

Weight training is the fastest way to lose fat as the muscle you build need constant food and will use the fat to maintain muscle mass.
You have to eat the right foods e.g. protein and avoid avoid carbs/sugary stuff at night as what the body doesn't need gets stored as fat. Try and prepare fixed portions of meals that's just enough to keep you going till next meal time.
You could try doing more abs exercise or low intensity cardio where you keep your heart rate low as this also helps to burn fat. There's loads of info on the net or get a few sessions with a pt who will show you the right moves
Hope this helps. |

"You can't spot lose fat, it'll come off where it wants not where you want.
This is also true, especially not belly fat. "
Spot reduction has been long proven to be a myth.
You want to lose belly fat, you have to lose bodyfat, and you do that by either reducing your calorie intake, increasing your calorie expenditure, or both - doing hundred of sit ups is useless. |

You can have the best 6 pack ever, but if its under a layer of fat you won't be able to see it. Lose the fat by eating clean, doing weights, and doing HIIT cardio. Then concentrate more on the weights and do less cardio. Keep eating protein to keep your energy up for the weight training.
I am also trying to get rid of a belly, but after childbirth I reckon its going to be tough. Good luck! |

I believe the body stores fat around the organs and thats what causes the belly , heard on radio a few months back a good way of getting rid of it is running up a hill as hard as you can a few times and walking slowly down as the rest period |

Make sure your doing your dieting correctly 500 calories below maintenance calories and do HIIT training for example sprint as fast as you can for 90 sec then walk for 60 sec repeat for 20min, I also do HIT weight training which is like a cardio workout itself lots of super sets 15-20 reps and 30-60 sec rest between each set. |

the problem is more long term all the flappy bits are loose skin. it will take a long time for it to shrink
well done to you for all the hard work. I my self am down to 15 stone ish (96kg) from 19 stone ish (112kg) at my biggest. although I am now a 38 inch waist from a 44inch waist I still see my belly as being big instead of thinking my old jeans fall off me so try looking at the positive |

"Eat healthy, cut out the 'treats'."
You say that like its easy - I once almost managed to press an 80kg bag of cement overhead, that was nothing compared to cutting out all the things I enjoy eating |

Yep. I have fallen into the trap of thinking my exercise burns off a lot more than it does so allow myself extras more than I should. I've taken to writing every thing I eat down. Even if I ate 2 mushrooms while prepping dinners etc |

Very true but it's just mental discipline that is needed.

Alternate cardio, weights and toning.
Try to eat healthy as that is probably the hardest of all.
And rest ! As stupid as it sounds a day or 2 off helps your body and muscles recover, theres only so much ripping you can do in a week let your body recover.
Keep at it, don't give up and the misses will love you for it |

Ok for one you need a a good diet high protein low carbs. The reason why you are putting on weight is because your doing weights ie putting muscle on and that will put more weight on as muscle weighs more than fat. You wont see good progress for a while but will happen slow just eat right train hard and you will see benefits and progression. |

You'll probably find different instructors at the gym have different areas they specialise in. Since you're there often, check them out and ask their advice. |

I would recommend not using your weight as your point of measurement, find out your body fat percentage and use that as a measurement, it will be more accurate for what you want and give you a true measure of your bodies recomposition.
Going by weight alone it can be disheartening when progress slows, stops or reverses and at this point many give up, by using body fat percentage you can see how much of it really is fat loss slowing down and how much is muscle gain and keep yourself motivated. |

"Fat loss = calories in vs calories out, eat more to gain weight, eat less to lose weight, there's really little more to it that than."
It is so much more than that, but it is a starting point.

Well done I've gone from 42 waist in jeans to a 36 waist so I know it's working but just disheartened that for last month or so it's not shifting |

Not really, you'll find that though cutting out various food groups and altering insulin sensitivity can make a slight difference, most nutritionists still conclude that fat loss essentially comes down to calories in vs calories out. |

Anyone look to train their abs would be better off doing crunches rather than sit ups, that transfer most of the weight into the hips. When you crunch, you shouldn't be lifting your upper back much more than a couple of inches off the floor, and as you do this, try and imagine you're pushing your belly button down toward the floor, this will get the best contraction in the abs.
Holding a dumbbell with your arms outstretched is also a good idea to increase resistance (I'd just get bored doing 100 crunches), and you should use a weight that allows you to get no more than around 20 reps. |

There can be a lot more if you factor in the effects of insulin in the body. People who are insulin resistant need to control carbs, and high protein diets work much better for them. |

A good alternative to a lot of the other ideas, all good though , would be to try a Kettle Bell class. You'll get a good mix of workouts with weights and cardio exercise too, along with a range of motions, squats, lunges etc. Which will all help to tone |

The trouble is most nutritionists are way behind on medical research, and even the medical profession are really slow to accept new thought. If your insulin is normal, calories may be way more improtant, but if you are resistant, you would literally have to starve to lose weight without restricting carbs. Insulin is a 'storage' hormone - body builders should be able to manipulate that to their advantage, but those seeking to burn their own fat may find that just does not happen until insulin is controlled.
Interestingly there is an 'epidemic' of insulin resistance among horses too, and exactly the same principles apply. |
