I give respect initially, if it is given back, well and good. If not, I'll probably not bother with the person much.
Karma is too much of a turning wheel to mess with! |

"I am not talking forum rules here, but life in general, do you give respect automatically or do you believe it has to be earned? "
Respect is given until it is abused. Then they have to work damn hard to earn it again! |

in day to day life manners are given automatically to everyone as i believe they cost nothing
however i believe respect is mutually gained between two individuals over a period of time through actions, words and deeds.
however there are exceptions to the rule (armed forces personnel & emergency services etc) who are given my respect immediately. |

I think everybody you meet deserves respect initially, otherwise we'd all be a bunch of irritating arseholes, but if that respect isn't reciprocated, then that person won't be getting a lot of my attention in the future. Also if people are initially rude to me then they will soon see just how very disrespectful I can be. |

For me respect = admiration. There are few people I admire. It has to be earned.
I am courteous, civil and respectful of everyone's rights. This is just how I was brought up. |

I'm on a diversity course today, and have just been told that is wrong, you should treat people how they wish to be treated.
I hate training days!! |

I'm not the sort of person (in general life) whowhen I meet someone I'm not consciously thinking "hmmmm shall I give this person my respect? "
I treat everyone the same...all you're ever going to get is "Ben".
Until I think you're an idiot ..that's when you lose my respect.
I don't get the whole "socio-ego" thing.
That being said..I hate everyone equally so there's that. |

Both, i always try to earn someones respect and will respect others especially if they have earned it rather than expected it |

Yes, there are two definitions/interpretations of the word being used. I give everyone the basic 'respectful treatment' amount of respect automatically, and you can either lose that respect by proving to be unworthy of it, or show yourself worthy of my admiration, an increased form of respect. |

No I don't give it automatically.
There are people in life that I have zero respect for & all that they stand for is abhorrent to me.
On the whole, I treat people well but that doesn't guarantee respect, it may be formed over time.
and I am comfortable for others to treat me exactly the same.
