Over the rainbow, under the bridge |
Remember when:
we had no central heating
we had no double glazing
we had black and white tellies (and only one per household if you were lucky)
streets were played out in because there were very few cars
we didn't have wall to wall carpeting (just a large rug covering the lino)
we had no freezer - and sometimes no fridge
we kept food cool in pantries
we polished our shoes every night
we never went to A & E for every little bump and scrape - only if a limb was hanging off
we had no mobiles - in fact, most people didn't even have landlines
Anything else we managed to live without? |

I remember as a kid waking up and my bedside drink was frozen solid. dressing under the duvet (we where trend setters back then) cos it was too cold to do otherwise.
hell until i was 7 we had an outside toilet, built into the house, but accessed only from outside.
My bedroom was the bay window with a curtain between me and my parents until i was 5. I tell younger people this and they never believe me. |

I never had a shop bought cardi, scarf, hat or gloves when I was a kid. No one did! My mum used to make all our knitwear, hand-me-downs were the norm (I was the youngest so very rarely got new clothes). We always carried a hanky up our sleeves too.
Toilet paper was newspaper cut into squares and threaded on wire for the outside loo. Mum used to have to boil a kettle of water to pour down it in the winter as it froze over in the night.
If we needed the loo in the night we had to use the gazunder (because it goes under the bed). |

I remember all of that.
I also remember we didn't get tons of junk mail everyday,
I remember people visiting our house always closed our gate ......and bin-men collected our bin from wherever it was stored and returned it to that place once empty.....
I remember a time when the elder generation frowned upon the idea of people walking around eating in the street.....

of course there was a plus side to all that.
Being able to get out and spend all day away from home, no worries about traffic, after all horse and carts did not travel fast. no panic about pedo's, i mean they must have been there, but everyone watched out for everyone else's kids.
days spent damming the local streams, building bonfires and burning down the local woods.

But we did have a family GP who was part of the community and was on call 24 hrs a day all year round.
And there was an unvandalized public telephone at the bottom of the road and a local manned PO exchange who knew where your GP was and would put you through if the surgery was closed. |

We did our laundry at the wash house!! Huge sinks and scrubbing boards. But there were also roller irons and a Hoffman press which cut down ironing at home. I used to do the fulk family wash on my own when my mum was ill with her first cancer. Dad and brother wouldn't do it - it was women's work. |

I guess these post-war situations lasted longer here than on the Continent. But I do remember the butcher's lad delivering orders on his bike, and the baker's cart and the milkfloat, and the knife grinder with all the kids milling around with dull knives and scissors and sparks flying from the big wheel, and the whole school went to the health centres for the annual inoculations and there were NO exceptions (for religious or whatever reasons), we had kids wearing polio leg braces in our class so nobody even wanted to skip those jabs (but the boys tended to faint ... |

Elastic bands to hold up your socks when the elastic went in them and the marks they left after a long day at school.
Socks doubling up as gloves and carrier bags over the top so we could play in the snow.
Warming up each item of clothing on the 2 bar electric heater before getting them on quick so we didn't freeze.

A start of a music career meant hours and hours playing guitars whose action was so high you could cut a round of cheddar with ease.
Nowadays you get a start in music by being laughed at on Sat night TV |

We had an outside toilet until I moved out at 21. I slept in a room that also doubled up as living room and dining room. The front room was kept nice and tidy in case the vicar called round. And this was before anyone near us had a TV! Those were the days. Couldn't get any sex then either. |

I only grew up in the 80's, but remember most things like no central heating, ice on the inside of windows, horrible grey itchy blankets on the bed (that looked like or could possibly have been from the army). Bath night on a Sunday, Izal bog roll, to name but a few!
50p in the leccy meter! When it ran out, you could gaurantee we had no 50p's in the house.
Going to the shop at 7 and buying my mum 20 embassey number 1.
Meat slicers in the corner shop!
Buying a 1/4 of winter nips!
Clothes from the jumble sale.
4 kids in one bedroom!
Playing out all day til night fall.

I remember getting our first colour TV. My dad got it from an advert in the paper. We was all so excited that all if us went to collect it. It was horrendous though as this women was selling it as her husband had died and she all of a sudden had four excited children in her house. |
