thats what I mean but it does not work for everyone
my eldest daughter is a gym freak, she spends at least 2 hours a day in the gym, she's very toned, is about 5ft10 tall and a size 8 is to big for her, the girls got no shape at all, she's what I would call skinny not slim but has a BMI of 30 which classes her as over weight, go figure that one |

The calliper pinch test is a much better way to determine percentage body fat. Body Mass Index is a rough inaccurate guide. I way just under sixteen stone, according to the chart I'm in the morbidly obese at risk category. You can judge for yourselves if it is accurate. |

I got told I was overweight. Despite me being only 10 and a half stone . Since then I am 12 stone 3 and my BMI has gone down and I feel healthy. Most of the time that is |

for the lay person that is a good method but medical professions like putting you in boxes, its just a shame the methods they use are flawed |

Hmm kinda but problem is that some fats are worse then others. Saturated fat is worst for instance. So skinny guy with a belly could have more saturated fat then guy with a generally bigger body because saturated fat goes straight to your gut.
Best way to check fitness is a fitness test I think. Like bleep test |

size and fitness does not always go hand in hand I don't think, I know plenty of slim people who couldn't run for the bus, I cycle on average 30 miles a day and im a fat bugger, so though I wouldn't put myself in the category of an athlete id say I do ok for fitness regardless of my size |

I do community nursing, as in house called, I don't drive so I cycle between my calls, which covers on average 30 miles a day, my first call at 6am is 6.4 miles from my home |

BMI is not a good way to measure fitness. A body builder, for example, would be classed as obese, whilst most marathon runners would be classed as underweight on BMI alone.
It might give an indication of ideal weight for the average Joe, but fitness has nothing to do with weight anyway! Body composition analysis will give a much better idea of health status. |

Most pro rugby players would be classed as obese under the BMI rules.
I cycle everywhere, i can average 18mph over a 35 mile circuit, ride 100 mile circuits etc, have a resting heart rate of 45bpm yet i still think I'm carrying too much weight at 9 stone and 5'2". |

BMI was never intended as, and is never used as, a measure of fitness. It's a rough guide to how fat you are. It works ok for typical people, but is a blunt instrument. Muscle tissue is denser than fat, so for genuinely athletic people with a very high percentage of muscle tissue, it's totally inappropriate. All clinicians I have ever met are well aware of this. |

BMI is full of pitfalls. A better way to gauge your healthy weight is to divide your height in inches by 2 and use that as a guide for your waist size. If you are over it, it could lead to health problems.
Eg 6' 2" = 74" / 2 = 37" waist
so at a tight 38" waist I could do with losing another couple of inches. (Off my waist!) |

Nope as it depends on body weight composition , my bmi is high but I'm all muscle ....so then as my bmi is on the upper range I'd be classed as over the limit so it makes very little sense really .... |

Not at all, used to believe in it all but had it done last year and I was classed as overweight, yet Im 5'2 and was 8stone (last year, this year I've discovered a love of pastys) so decided to ignore it. |
