I'm trying to get my web site nearer the 1st page of search engines by doing some basic search engine optimisation.

I need to find out what 'normal people' would search for in google if either their boiler had broken down and they need a repair or a new one and you needed to find someone to repair or replace it?

What would you google?

I'm touting for keywords not business so I'm hoping this doesn't break any forum rules

Brighton - even Hove!

I'd type in 'boiler repairs brighton' and see what I got and also go on checkatrade or something similar. I'd go for a combination of cost, local to me and most importantly customer reviews.

Not at all sure how the whole key words works but maybe try using error codes.

Did you make and do you maintain the website yourself?

There is so much more to SEO than keywords these days although I admit they are very important.

Do you use any tools for your website?

In Your Bush

I think blue waffle is the most searched for thing on here. Add it as a tag and pick up some random traffic.

A combination of that and 'old boiler'? I don't want to imagine the photos.

Ha ha yes made the website myself, 1st attempt at a website , currently reading my way through SEO for dummies, I realise there is more to it than keywords I just need to get other peoples opinions on what they would search for, as I might say, gas safe boiler installer/installation but realise others wouldn't 700 pages on SEO ain't exactly riveting reading but not long started up so cash isn't rolling in and I have the time on my hands to attempt to do it myself.

I'd search for 'boiler repair' or 'central heating'. Or 'Corgi engineer'.

I would search for:-

Plumber

Heating Engineer

As a web developer I also would recommend that you include the names of all manufacturers you deal with, and also model numbers and if there are any error codes all things that people may search for.

Also recommend you sign up to Google Analytics it will let you know how people find your site so you can enhance the specifics.

It also helps if you are listed on others websites, so for example if you work with electricians / plasterers who have their own sites put their links on your site and get your site linked from theirs.

Finally getting onto comparison sites checkatrade etc. is always good but make sure YOUR site is listed on them not just their links.

Corgi has been a hard one to cast off, money grabbing b'stards... Gas Safe is actually administered by the HSE, the price to register (paid yearly) have reduced by over a £100 since they took over.

Hi thanks some good advice, I've been struggling to think of where I could get some backlinks to, not many relevant sites would actually want to link to a sole trader plumbers web site.

not sure what the boundaries are here, think it's safe to mention google analytics, there is a LOT of good info there, make sure your sitemap is sound depending on complexity of the site you can either write your own, or there are free tools you can search for that will help.

keywords are often ignored if only in meta tags, but web crawlers tend not to use javascript or CSS so you an write swathes and hide it from the actual viewer whilst still feeding the search engines.

Might the OP be in a position to get together will other local, non-competing, traders to form a small association, all of whom could link to each other's sites?

Maybe their, and your, suppliers and customers would link too.

Then there's social media

One final bit of advice... KISS Keep It Simple Stupid! is key to a good website. not too much text on a page and not to complex a structure. as a sole trader make damned sure a phone number and Email link is easily visible on every page, after all you don't earn if they don't contact.

I was thinking of searching for other plumbers on the web who wouldn't be working in my area and vice versa and contacting them to backlinking to each others websites, as it is something that the seachbots look for and can increase you chances of rising up the search rankings. The bots also look for revelancy between the linked sites.

Someone looked over my site last week and did bring to my attention that the only place my numbers were was on the contact page so that has been recently rectified. The site is about six pages at the moment probably going to add a couple more soon as I was thinking about putting some prices on there as I know it bugs me when there is no idea of a price scale of some sort on a page offering services and was going to start a links page with appliance manufacturers pages on it along with gas safe, energy saving trust etc.

There is only so much you can waffle on about plumbing so it is relatively short on text, a few pictures of work I've done in the past. Links to gas safe operative checker.

When you say swathes do you mean where say white text is written on a white background so it is visible to a searchbot but not to a visitor?

W3Schools is where you need to go... search for it, there is all you need to know about HTML CSS PHP JavaScript etc. on there.

Specifically look at creating a DIV class with display: none;

As the search bot doesn't load the CSS it doesn't know that the text is not displayed.

I just tried to type a sample but it won't allow me to post it... search for w3schools look for CSS display: none; and you will get it.

The world and their dog are trying to get on the front page of Google. My opinion is to use Facebook as a means to point people to your website
